November 19, 2002

The University of Minnesota-Morris is ranked #2 in the nation in the first TheMat.com U.S. College Women's Wrestling Poll. Nine of the UM-Morris women were ranked in the top eight wrestlers in the nation.

Sophomore Patrice Crenshaw (East Point, GA) is ranked number one at 112 pounds. Crenshaw who is coming off a season-ending injury from last year is now a dominating force for the Cougars. Crenshaw placed 4th in the prestigious Sunkist International Open this season.

Junior Marcie Van Dusen (Marina, CA) is ranked number one at 121 pounds. Van Dusen was just recently named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Regina Cup. She went 3-0 and out scored her opponents 35-2. Van Dusen is a member of the US National Team and a two-time Cadet world bronze medalist.

At 105 pounds UMM has both Katrina Betts (Milan, MI) and Liz Short (Lombard, IL) ranked number two and three in the polls. Both Betts and Short are Junior National Champions in 2002 and both have placed in the world championships.

Other ranked UM-Morris wrestlers are Keli Hinton (Andover, KS) #5 at 112 pounds, Katie Ross (Greensboro, NC) #4 at 121 pounds, Sharon Jacobson (El Cajon, CA) #4 at 129 pounds, Ranae Faaborg (Radcliffe, IA) #8 at 138 pounds, and Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, WI) #4 at 158 pounds.

"I am very proud of our athletes," said coach Doug Reese. "These athletes train very hard, and sacrifice much to wrestle at this high level. These rankings are just a result of disciplined effort over time," noted Reese.

The Cougar women's mat program is also ranked number two in the United States behind Missouri Valley College. The University of Minnesota-Morris captured the USA Wrestling University National Championship last season, its seventh national championship while ranked third in the nation at the time.
