Monday, April 14, 2003

Five University of Minnesota-Morris women wrestlers placed in the top five at the 6th Annual FILA-Junior National Championships at St. Ben's College in St. Joseph, earning All-American honors on Saturday, April 12th.

Champions from this event will represent the United States in the Junior World Championships in Ankara, Turkey in August. Two UMM wrestlers placed second in the tournament and will be alternates for the World Championships.

Liz Short (Lombard, IL) placed second at 44 kilos/97 pounds and Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, WI) placed second at 72 kilos/158 pounds.

Due to the pool system, even though Liz Short defeated Erica Dye, the champion at 44 kilos, 8-6 in overtime, Short placed second in the event based upon technical points.

Goldsmith lost in the finals to Juanita Russel of New York 8-6 for the silver medal.

Tabithia Ramsey (Austin, TX) placed 3rd at 48 kilos/105 pounds, and Sharon Jacobson (El Cajon, CA) placed 3rd at 59 kilos/129 pounds. Ramsey pinned Jessica Dougherty of Missouri Valley College in 2:13 for the bronze medal. Jacobson trailed Linse Owens of Menlo College 5-0 when she earned a fall off a throw at 4:14 for the bronze medal.

Ranae Faaborg (Radcliffe, IA) placed 5th at 63 kilos/138 pounds. Faaborg pinned Megan Nevill of Michigan at 4:31 to claim a fifth place finish and All-American honors.

"We had a terrible first round," said UMM head coach Doug Reese, "but we bounced back and wrestled much better as the day went on. I am very proud of our efforts today. Any time you can wrestle well and place high in a national championship, you have been blessed. We have been blessed all season, and we are thankful for everything we have accomplished this year."
