UM-Morris claims high rankings in final TheMat.com poll

Patrice Crenshaw ends the season ranked #1 in the nation

Colorado Springs, CO - TheMat.com announced their final rankings of the U.S. College Women's Wrestling rankings on April 22, 2003. On top of the list at 51 kilos/112 pounds was UM-Morris' Patrice Crenshaw (East Point, GA).

Crenshaw has enjoyed a banner year placing high in almost every tournament for the Cougars this season including a fourth place finish at the Sunkist International Open and a third place finish in USA Wrestling's University National Championships earning All-American honors.

Ranked second in the nation are sophomore Liz Short at 48 kilos/105 pounds, and freshman Sharon Jacobson at 59 kilos/130 pounds.

Short (Lombard, IL) had another strong season placing fourth at the Sunkist International Open and earning All-American honors in the FILA-Junior Nationals and the University National Championships. Short is also the alternate for the FILA-Junior World Championships this season after placing 8th in the University World Championships last June.

Sharon Jacobson (El Cajon, CA) has been a pleasant suprise all season with her outstanding performances. Jacobson has placed in every event this season including a 6th place finish at the Sunkist International Open, a 4th at the FILA-Manitoba Open and a 3rd place finish and All-American honors at the FILA-Junior National Championships. Jacobson has secured an invitation to the U.S. World Team Trials with her champion at the Northern Plains Regional Championships.

The greatest suprise of the season is the rise of freshman Ranae Faaborg (Radcliffe, IA). Faaborg, a relative rookie in the sport, came from literally nowhere, to a ranking of third in the nation at 138 pounds/63 kilos. Faaborg earned All-American honors with a impressive 5th place finish in the FILA-Junior National Championships.

Also ranked for the Cougars is Megan Goldsmith (Merrillan, WI) fourth at 158 pounds/72 kilos, and Katie Ross (Greensboro, NC) 7th at 59 kilos/130 pounds.

Goldsmith placed fourth in both the FILA-Junior National Championships and the University National Championships. Katie Ross placed 5th at the Sunkist International Open in the best performance of her career and has capture a World Team Trial birth with her finish at the Northern Plains Regional Championships.

In the final TheMat.com poll, UM-Morris finished ranked third, and fifth in the North American Collegiate Women's Wrestling Poll. The Cougars finish the season undefeated in dual meet competition for the seventh straight season.
