UM-Morris Defeats Concordia College 27-17 in dual meet action

Moorhead, MN - The University of Minnesota-Morris downed Concordia College on Tuesday, January 9th with a decisive 27-17 dual meet victory. It was the Cougars first dual meet since wrestling at Arizona State on November 24th.

The meet started with the 174 pound weight class. UMM coach, Doug Reese bumped up 165 pound wrestler Kris Hjelmeland after 184 pound wrestler, Eric Steinhoff was injured the previous weekend and was unable to compete. Hjelmeland wrestled to a 6-0 decision versus Rory Olson to give the UMM at 3-0 lead in the dual.

Brian Eddy moved up to 184 from his normal 174 pound spot in the lineup. Eddy wrestled a tough physically dominating match, defeating Dane Vulcan 11-2 for a major decision. The Cougars then forfeited at 197 pounds and Concordia's Jared Sannes recorded the win.

Heavyweight Jeff Stewart scored this fifth fall of the season. Stewart scored a takedown and earned a nearfall before pinning Bryan Kvitek at 1:33 in the first period. Stewart was followed by Dante Lewis in the 125 pound bout who earned another fall for the Cougars. Lewis built a 16-6 lead before notching a fall at 6:12.

Darin Mathis dropped a 13-4 major decision to Zack Schroeder of Concordia at 133 pounds. The Cougars came back at 141 pounds when Joel Fugleberg scored a major decision over Concordia's Aaron Swatz. Fugleberg scored on four takedowns and a three-point nearfall for the win.

Jeremy Benson lost to Cory Winter in the 149 pound match. Winter scored with nearfall points to secure a 11-6 decision. In the 157 pound match, UMM's Ryan Hansen lost a 12-4 major decision versus Jesse Barnacle.

In the final match of the evening, UMM's Mike Sloneker scored a 10-2 decision in the 165 pound bout. Slonker earned the win with three late takedowns, wrestling well throughout the match. The Cougars are now 2-3 on the season in dual meet action.

Joel Fugleberg places 3rd in Central College Invitational

Pella, IA - University of Minnesota-Morris sophomore wrestler Joel Fugleberg continued his successful efforts on the mat, placing third in the 141 pound weight class on Saturday, January 13th at Central College, in Pella, Iowa.

Fugleberg opened the tournament with a first round bye. In the quarterfinals, Fugleberg defeated Jamie Scott of Central College with an 8-6 decision on the strength of three takedowns. In the semifinals, Fugleberg was defeated by a talented Casey Doyle of Wartburg College 9-3.

In the consolation round, Fugleberg defeated NCAA II Regional foe Phil Wilkey of Truman State 5-2 to advance to the consolation finals. In the match for third place, Fugleberg had to once again face Jamie Scott of Central College. This time Fugleberg dominated Scott for a 13-2 major decision and claimed the bronze medal and his 16 victory of the season.

Kris Hjelmeland was one victory short of qualifying for the consolation finals at 165 pounds. Hjelmeland won a 14-13 decision versus Kris Fleurstul of William Penn, defeated teammate Mike Sloneker 4-0, and downed Curt Gomes of William Penn win a 13-0 major decision.

Also wrestling well for the Cougars was Jeremy Benson at 149 pounds. Benson won decisions over Josh Ohm of Cornell College 8-4 and against Mark Peterson of Augsburg 6-4. Darin Mathis at 133 pounds recorded a fall versus Phil Esposito of Truman State at 4:42, Mathis went 1-2 for the tournament.

Mike Sloneker picked up a win at 165 pounds. Sloneker won an exciting come from behind victory over Jesse Oliver of Cornell College in the closing seconds to win 10-7. Brian Eddy went 1-2 at 174 pounds. Eddy picked up a fall in 2:47 versus Geoff Wendt of St. Olaf College after building a solid 11-0 lead. And heavyweight, Jeff Stewart picked up his sixth win of the season with a come from behind win versus Terry Neuman of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. Stewart scored a takedown and a three-point near fall, then pinned Neuman in 2:37.
