St. Cloud State Wrestling Report for 1/29/2001
UPCOMING FOR THE HUSKIES: The Huskies (6-4, 2-1 NCC) will host MSU, Moorhead on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m.
THE RESULTS: The #18 Huskies dropped a tough 31-15 loss at #6 South Dakota State on Jan. 26. Dan Duch gained a win for the Huskies at 174 with a 2-0 decision over Tony Stibral. At 197, #2 Luke Wren charted a pin over Dustin Wagner at 1:23 for the Huskies while SCSU heavyweight #6 Dustin Darveaux posted a win by forfeit against the Jacks...in action on Jan. 27, the Huskies gained a big 24-23 win at Augustana. At 157, #5 Matt Neumueller pinned the Vikings1 Lincoln Likness at 1:45. Duch completed a weekend sweep with a 9-3 win at 174 over Jeremy Murphy before Wren pinned his opponent Ben McKenzie at 2:43 in action at 197. Darveaux also charted a 7-6 win over #7 ranked James Garvey at heavyweight. Darveaux trailed 4-1 in the match before staging a strong late round comeback.
TEAM NOTES: Coach Steve Grimit (53-48 in 8 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies1 22-17 dual win over UNC...in eight seasons of wrestling, coach Steve Grimit never experienced a tie dual meet at SCSU. On Jan. 19, Grimit posted a pair of dual match ties. The first was a 19-19 tie against Central Missouri (SCSU won by criteria) and the second was a 22-22 tie against Augustana (SCSU lost by criteria)... Luke Wren was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 9. Wren, a midseason transfer from Adams State, was also named to the Division II Duals All-Tournament team...Dustin Darveaux leads the team this season with a 27-8 record, while Matt Neumueller is 26-9. Luke Wren is a near perfect 10-1 at 197 this season...Klaus Alberts, an All-American in 1999, will miss the 2000-01 season due to injuries...in the last Division II wrestling polls, Darveaux was ranked sixth nationally at heavyweight, while Neumueller was ranked fifth and Wren was ranked 2nd at 197-pounds...six NCC teams are ranked among the nation's top 20 Division II teams (#1 UNO, #3 NDSU, #6 SDSU and #8 MSU, Mankato, #16 Northern Colorado, #18 ST. CLOUD STATE) as of Jan. 16.
THE RECORD: SCSU is 6-4, 2-1 NCC in dual meet action this season...The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC. At the 2000 NCC meet, SCSU placed 6th.
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his eighth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 53-49/.520 overall record.
