St. Cloud State Wrestling Report for Feb. 12, 2001
UPCOMING FOR THE HUSKIES: The #17 Huskies (7-6, 2-3 NCC) will
travel to Division III opponent St. John1s University on Feb. 14, at
7:30 p.m. in Collegeville. On Feb. 16, the Huskies will wrestle at
#1 Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m.
THE RESULTS: North Dakota State collected a pair of pins, a
technical fall, and a forfeit victory in racing to a 38-9 win over
St. Cloud State on Feb. 10 in Fargo, N.D. #2 NDSU improved to 7-3-1
overall and 3-1-1 in the NCC. SCSU slipped to 7-6 in duals. In the
match, Matt Neumueller gained a big 9-2 win at 157 pounds over Thad
Pike. Luke Wren gained a win at 197-pounds with an injury default
win over Bryan Mueller. At heavyweight, Dustin Darveaux lost a 3-2
thriller against #1 ranked Nick Severson of NDSU...on Feb. 6, the
Huskies dropped a 31-9 match against #7 MSU, Mankato. SCSU gained
its lone wins with Wren at 197 pounds (16-0 over Paul Okins) and
Darveaux at heavyweight (9-0 over Travis Wiuff).
TEAM NOTES: Coach Steve Grimit (54-51 in 8 seasons) won his 50th
career dual match with the Huskies1 22-17 dual win over UNC...in
eight seasons of wrestling, coach Steve Grimit never experienced a
tie dual meet at SCSU. On Jan. 19, Grimit posted a pair of dual
match ties. The first was a 19-19 tie against Central Missouri (SCSU
won by criteria) and the second was a 22-22 tie against Augustana
(SCSU lost by criteria)... Luke Wren was named the NCC Wrestler of
the Week on Jan. 9. Wren, a midseason transfer from Adams State, was
also named to the Division II Duals All-Tournament team...Dustin
Darveaux leads the team this season with a 29-9 record, while Matt
Neumueller is 28-10. Luke Wren is a near perfect 13-1 at 197 this
season...Klaus Alberts, an All-American in 1999, will miss the
2000-01 season due to injuries...in the last Division II wrestling
polls, Darveaux was ranked 7th nationally at heavyweight, while
Neumueller was ranked 8th and Wren was ranked 2nd at
197-pounds...seven NCC teams are ranked among the nation1s top 20
Division II teams (#1 UNO, #2 NDSU, #4 SDSU and #7 MSU, Mankato, #15
Northern Colorado, #17 ST. CLOUD STATE, #20 Augie) as of Jan. 29.
THE RECORD: SCSU is 7-6, 2-3 NCC in dual meet action this
season...The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet
action, and 2-4 in the NCC. At the 2000 NCC meet, SCSU placed
6th.
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit
(Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his eighth season as head
coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 54-51/.518
overall record.
