St. Cloud State Team Report - Season Final

THE SEASON IS COMPLETE: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. Last year, SCSU placed 27th.

THE RESULTS: In action at the 2001 NCAA meet, SCSU placed three wrestlers in the top seven. At 174, senior Paul Arens gained All-America honors with a fifth place finish. He gained the win with a big 2-1 decision over #5 ranked Travis Nagel of MSU, Moorhead. Overall, Arens was 4-2 at the NCAA meet...At 197, Luke Wren gained All-America honors with a fifth place finish. He pinned NDSU's Bryan Kraemer at 2:40 to in the fifth place match. Overall, Wren went 3-2 at the NCAA meet...At heavyweight, Dustin Darveaux went 3-2 at the NCAA meet and capped the event with a 16-5 win over Doug Smith in the match for 7th place (which gave Darveaux All-America honors)...SCSU's other wrestlers at the meet were Matt Neumueller, who went 1-2 at 157 and Nate Whiting, who was 2-2 at 184...SCSU placed 14th as a team with 32.5 points. NDSU won its second consecutive team crown with 98.5 points...

TEAM NOTES: Coach Steve Grimit (55-52 in 8 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC...... Luke Wren was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 9 and Feb. 20. ..Dustin Darveaux leads the team this season with a 37-13 record, while Matt Neumueller is 33-14. Luke Wren was a near perfect 20-4 at 197 this season...At the always rugged 2001 NCC Championships the Huskies charted a fifth place finish with 41 points as NDSU (75) won the meet...at 157, Neumueller placed third with a 3-1 record...at 174, Arens gained a third place title also at 3-1 in tournament action...at 184, Nate Whiting was an unseeded surprise who gained fourth place honors with a 2-2 mark ...in play at 197, Luke Wren charted a second place finish losing to #1 Chad Wallace of UNO in the finals (4-2 in OT). To reach the finals, Wren gained two wins...at heavyweight, Darveaux was 3-2 and nabbed fourth place with a gutty 10-4 win over Lance Tolstedt of UNO.

THE RECORD: SCSU finishes its dual meet season in 2000-01 with an 8-7, 2-4 NCC record (5th at the NCC championships and 14th at the NCAA meet)...The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his eighth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 54-51/.518 overall record.
