St. Cloud State Rebounds with Win Over UNC
St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State wrestling team (3-1, 1-0 NCC) gained a 22-17 win over NCC rival Northern Colorado (0-2, 0-1 NCC) in its home opener on Jan. 11, in Halenbeck Hall.
Sophomore Jamie Steffen (Farmington) got things started on the right foot with a major 13-4 decision over two-time All-American Jason Romero of Northern Colorado. UNC came back with wins at 133-, 141-, 149- and 157-pounds before senior Paul Arens of Sauk Centre broke the streak with a pinfall win at 165-pounds. Arens gained the win over UNC's Brian Hufford at 6:04.
At 174-pounds, Dan Duch charted a 3-1 win in overtime against UNC's Shad Stagl before Nate Whiting posted an 8-4 win over UNC's Ryan Guillaume at 184-pounds. At 197-pounds Dassel's Luke Wren carded a 5-2 win over #5 ranked Tom Clemen of Northern Colorado. The match was iced when SCSU heavyweight Dustin Darveaux defeated Tony Schunke of UNC, 11-4.
"Jamie Steffen's win at 125-pounds really started things rolling for us," coach Steve Grimit said. "He wrestled well throughout the match against a two-time All-American. Luke Wren also gained a big win for us at 197-pounds against another one of UNC's All-Americans. He really dominated the match."
The Huskies will return to action on Jan. 19-20, at the NCAA Division II Duals at South Dakota State.
