Hawkeyes defeat Hofstra, 40-3
IOWA CITY, IA -- The University of Iowa wrestling team used team bonus point victories in six matches to defeat Hofstra, 40-3, Saturday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes got off to a slow start with redshirt freshman Ryan Fulsaas winning an 8- 3 decision at 197 pounds, and sophomore Josh Liddle losing a 5-3 match at heavyweight. But Iowa used major decisions by seniors Jody Strittmatter and Eric Juergens at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, and a third-period pin by senior Doug Schwab at 141 pounds to widen the gap. Junior Mike Zadick scored a takedown with four seconds left in the 149 pound-match to record a 4-3 victory, and senior T.J. Williams recorded 10 nearfall points in his 18-2 technical fall, which stopped his 157-pound match at the 5:16 mark. Junior Ben Shirk overcame a first period deficit to win an 8-6 decision at 165 pounds. Senior Gabe McMahan and junior Jessman Smith rounded out the night, with McMahan winning by injury default at 174 pounds and Smith's opponent being disqualified in the second period at 184.
Iowa (8-1) will open Big Ten season Sunday against Northwestern in Evanston, IL. The dual is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
