Augsburg Wins 15th Consecutive MIAC Wrestling Title
-
- COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. - The Augsburg wrestling team, ranked
number one nationally, won nine of 10 individual weight classes to
capture its 15th consecutive MIAC wrestling title on Saturday,
Feb. 24, at Sexton Arena on the Saint John's University campus.
SJU, currently ranked 17th nationally, finished second at the
meet. The 15 consecutive MIAC titles won is the second longest
active MIAC championship streak, only behind the 16 consecutive
indoor track and field titles that the St. Thomas men have
currently won. Augsburg coach Jeff Swenson was named MIAC Coach of
the Year after the meet.
-
- In all 17 MIAC wrestlers will advance to the national meet on
March 2-3, at Young Arena in Waterloo, Iowa. Augsburg qualified
all 10 of its wrestlers, SJU qualified four wrestlers and
Concordia-Moorhead, St. Olaf and St. Thomas each qualified one
wrestler.
-
- Highlights of the meet included Augsburg senior Nik
Lewandowski at 184-pounds becoming only the eighth MIAC wrestler
in history, and the first since 1993, to win four MIAC individual
championships in his career. Lewandowski is currently ranked
second nationally and has a 29-6 overall record.
-
- SJU senior Brandon Novak qualified for his fourth national
tournament with the MIAC title at 197-pounds. Novak, the number
one ranked wrestler nationally at his weight, won his second
career MIAC title and also was voted the Outstanding Wrestler at
the MIAC championship meet. Novak is now 17-1 overall.
-
- Defending national champion Ben Bauer, a senior at
heavyweight; defending national champion Nick Slack, a junior at
174-pounds; and two-time national runner-up Darin Bertram, a
junior at 125-pounds, all won their third consecutive MIAC titles.
All three are currently ranked number one nationally in their
respective weight classes. Slack has now 57 consecutive matches,
which is the second-longest streak in Augsburg wrestling
history.
-
- SJU senior Chris Suedbeck won the Rory Jordan Memorial Trophy
for the most pins in the least amount of time. Suedbeck had three
pins in 4:49.
