About the Beavers: Oregon State began the season with four dual meet wins over lesser opponents at their own tournament before losing three of its next four meets. The Beavers picked up a win over archrival Oregon via tiebreaker, but lost to nationally-ranked Arizona State, Nebraska and Oklahoma State to move their record to 5-3.
The Beavers return seven starters and four NCAA qualifiers from last season. OSU's led by seniors Nathan Navarro (ranked 20th at 133 pounds), Nathan Coy (9th at 174 pounds) and Jason Cooley (9th at heavyweight).
Oregon State finished in 19th place at the 2001 NCAA Championships with 25.5 points. The Beavers had one All-American, Eric Jorgensen, who finished fifth at 157 pounds. Jorgensen is now a graduate assistant with OSU. The Beavers placed third at the 2001 Pac-10 Championships with Jorgensen and Coy earning conference crowns.
The Series: Minnesota holds a 4-3-1 record over Oregon State, dating back to 1973. The Golden Gophers and Beavers last met in 1998 with Minnesota winning 26-12 in Corvallis, Ore. Prior to the 1998 meeting, Minnesota and OSU had not faced each other since 1983 when the the Beavers tied the Maroon and Gold 22-22. Oregon State has not defeated Minnesota since the 1975-76 season when OSU downed the Golden Gophers 30-11.

Battle with Iowa Approaches: Undoubtedly the highlight of the 2001-02 schedule, archrivals Minnesota and Iowa face off at Minneapolis' Target Center on Friday, Feb. 1, for conference bragging rights in a rematch of the Golden Gophers' two nailbiting triumphs over the Hawkeyes in 2000-01. The border battle also exists as an attempt by Minnesota to break the NCAAwrestling dual meet attendance record of 15,291, set on Feb. 22, 1992, when Iowa def eated Iowa State 29-8 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes return just two All-Americans in Mike Zadick (149) and Ben Shirk (165), but, as always, Iowa boasts a top recruiting class which is helping in their reloading for 2001-02.
Tickets for the much-anticipated meet at the Target Center are available through Ticketmaster at (651) 989-5151 or www.ticketmaster.com.
