Mavericks Defeat Luther 23-21;

Makovsky Earns 100th Win as MSU Head Coach

1/6/02

Last Week: The Minnesota State wrestling team (1-1, 0-0 NCC) travelled to Decorah, Iowa Saturday and defeated Luther College 23-21. The Norse came into the match ranked sixth in NCAA Division III.

Junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) came away with the biggest win of the dual, a fall over defending Division III champion Garrett Kurth with one second remaining in the second period. Major decisions from freshman Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) and junior Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) proved important as Luther picked up three falls to keep the match tight.

With the win, coach Jim Makovsky earned his 100th win as the Mavericks head coach. He becomes the second MSU wrestling coach to reach that plateau, joining Maverick legend Rummy Macias.

The Series: The Mavericks now hold a perfect 6-0 record over Luther. The two teams last met during the 1999-2000 campaign, with the Mavericks pulling out a 27-18 victory.

What's Next: The Bison of North Dakota State await the Mavericks on Jan. 12. This will open the conference season for MSU as they will travel to Fargo to battle the defending conference and NCAA Division II champions. Bucky Maughan's squad holds a series lead of 28-8-1 over the Mavericks dating back to the 1966-67 season.

Coach Makovsky: Jim Makovsky is in his ninth season at the helm of the Minnesota State, Mankato wrestling team. The Mavericks are 100-44-2 under Makovsky and his career record stands at 125-63-4. Makovsky is a 1989 graduate of Valley City State University where he served as head coach for four seasons prior to his arrival at MSU. Makovsky has tutored 30 All-Americans in his career and seven national champions, including Matt Petsinger last season.

30-30 Vision: Junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) is on pace for his second 30-win season as a Maverick. After a 31-16 record and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Division II tournament, Hisek is 12-4 with five falls.

They're Back: Seniors Matt Gadient (Goodhue, Minn.) and Aaron Pyfferoen (Byron, Minn.) made their return to the mat in the Luther dual. Both had been sidelined with injuries early in the season. Pyfferoen sported a record of 22-13 last season and Gadient ranked second on last year's squad with 35 wins.

Mavericks In National Rankings: In the Division II national team poll, the Mavericks are ranked fifth, behind North Dakota State, Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Omaha and Ashland. Lester Berrios (Miami, Fla.) is fourth at 125 and Adam Kramer (New Hampton, Iowa) is fourth at 141. Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) is rated seventh at 149 and two-time All-American Matt Gadient (Goodhue, Minn.) is fourth at 165.
