Death of Minnesota State, Mankato wrestler

Mankato- Minnesota State University, Mankato officials report the sudden death of a student, Scott S. Mertz, on Sunday, Jan.6, 2002.

Mertz was a member of the MSU wrestling team in the 157-pound weight class with a record of 8-12 on the season. Mertz, a second-year student from Bloomington, Minn., was a marketing and sales major at the University.

According to information in the 2001-02 Mavericks Wrestling Guide, Mertz had a successful high school career, earning the Regiion 6AAA Championship his senior and sophomore years in the 140-pound weight class. He received all-conference, all-state and all-metro recognition his senior year. Mertz was also named team captain as a senior and holds the Jefferson High School record for the most takedowns. He was named the team's "Most Valuable Player" his sophomore and senior seasons.

"We are deeply saddened by Scott's death," said coach Jim Makovsky. "He was a charismatic person and a hard-working member of our program. He was the kind of person that people loved being around. Everyone in our program is grieving alongside of his family and we will miss him."

Mertz was the son of Stephen and Sandi Mertz of Bloomington. Funeral services will be held at St. Stevens Lutheran Church in Bloomington on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at the Werness Funeral Home in Bloomington.
