Mavericks Fall To Top-Ranked Bison; Two Home Matches Up Next

1/13/02

Last Week: The Minnesota State wrestling team (1-2, 0-1 NCC) dropped their first North Central Conference dual of the season against the Bison of North Dakota State University Saturday. The Mavericks were able to come up with two big wins in the dual but the two-time defending NCAA Division II champion Bison claimed a 28-11 victory.

Highlighting the Maverick effort were 149-pound junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) and 141-pound sophomore Dustin Kulseth (St. James, Minn.) Hisek, coming off a weekend that earned him NCC Wrestler of the Week honors, continued his winning ways with a technical fall over Collin Kelly, 19-3. Hisek racked up 10 near fall points in the match.

Kulseth emerged as the replacement for Adam Kramer after Kramer's season was ended by an injury. Trailing 7-3 after one period, Kulseth reversed Reese Boehm and put him directly to his back for a fall in 4:41. The dual was only his second as a Maverick.

Junior Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) moved up a weight class to take on two-time NCAA Division II champion Todd Fuller and Emerick dropped a close 6-2 decision.

What's Next: Two home dual meets await the Mavericks next weekend. On Friday, MSU will host the Dragons of Minnesota State University-Moorhead and Saturday will bring the Northern State University Wolves. Both matches will be in Bresnan Arena and begin at 7:00 p.m.

The Series: The Mavericks have enjoyed success against the next two opponents. They currently hold an 18-4-1 lead over MSU-Moorhead and a 3-0 lead over Northern State. Last season, the Mavericks tied the MSU-Moorhead 22-22. The last time the Mavericks faced Northern State University was during the 1997-98 season when they defeated the Wolves 37-4.

Coach Makovsky: Jim Makovsky is in his ninth season at the helm of the Minnesota State wrestling team. The Mavericks are 100-45-2 under Makovsky and his career record stands at 125-64-4. Makovsky is a 1989 graduate of Valley City State University where he served as head coach for four seasons prior to his arrival at MSU. Makovsky has tutored 30 All-Americans in his career and seven national champions, including Matt Petsinger last season.

Dual Action: Junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) is 3-0 in dual meets this season. His wins have been a fall over a defending Division III national champion, a victory over a Division I wrestler and a technical fall over his NDSU opponent this weekend.

Mavericks In National Rankings: In the Division II national team poll, the Mavericks are ranked sixth, behind North Dakota State, Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Omaha, Ashland and Pitt-Johnstown. Individually, senior Lester Berrios (Miami, Fla.) is fourth at 125, junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) is rated eighth at 149 and two-time All-American senior Matt Gadient (Goodhue, Minn.) is third at 165.
