St. Cloud State Update

UPCOMING MEETS: The Huskies (2-1) will host North Dakota State, the nation's number one ranked Division II team, on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The dual match in Halenbeck Hall will start at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free. On Jan. 19-20, the Huskies will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the NCAA Division II National Duals Tournament. The tournament will be held on the campus of Ohio State University. The dual meet tournament will feature many of the nation's top Division II programs, meeting head-to-head in dual meet competition.
LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.
THE RESULTS: On Jan. 8, the Huskies dropped a 36-6 loss at home to Augsburg College, the nation's number one ranked NCAA Division III program. Dustin Darveaux was the team's lone winner with a pinfall victory at heavyweight...on Jan. 10, the Huskies rebounded in top form with a big 24-12 win over non-conference rival Northern State University. The Huskies rolled to a 21-3 lead before NSU stage a slight comeback late in the dual. SCSU opened with a 10-7 win at 157 by Dan Duch. At 165, Matt Neumueller was with a 2:00 fall, and at 174, Jon Duncombe won a slick 5-1 match. At 197-pounds, Paul Breth charted a solid 6-2 win and Darveaux chalked up a big pin fall win at 1:57. To complete the match, Derek Miller cruised to a 7-5 win at 125-pounds.
TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the seventh ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (21-4) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season...Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 12-7 this year...Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 17-7 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (57-53 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year.
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 57-53 overall/20-33 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
