St. Cloud State Wrestling Update

UPCOMING MEETS: The Huskies (3-4) will host South Dakota State (ranked 7th in the last NCAA DII poll) on Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 26, the Huskies will host Augustana (ranked 14th in the last NCAA DII poll) at 2 p.m. Both matches will be held in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall. As always, admission is free to all SCSU home dual meets this season.

LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.

THE RESULTS: On Jan. 15, the Huskies dropped a tough 43-0 loss to #1 ranked North Dakota State in St. Cloud. The big showdown in the match came at heavyweight where #1 Nick Severson of NDSU posted a 2-1 double overtime win against SCSU's Dustin Darveaux, the nation's 7th ranked heavyweight...on Jan. 19, the Huskies travelled to Ohio State University for the NCAA Division National Duals Tournament. In first round action on Jan. 19, the Huskies dropped a 22-12 match to #10 Central Missouri State. Derek Miller (125), Nate Whiting (184) and Darveaux all gained wins for SCSU. In the consolation rounds, SCSU gained a 35-6 win over American International. Miller, Joe Sathre (141), Dan Duch (157), Matt Neumueller (165), Jon Duncombe (174), Whiting, Paul Breth (197) and Darveaux all posted wins. In the end match, SCSU lost 35-9 to #13 Findlay. Duncombe and Darveaux were the lone winners in the match.

TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the seventh ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (24-4) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 14-9 this year...Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 19-9 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (58-56 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 58-56 overall/20-34 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
