Mustangs Split with Dana, Dakota Wesleyan
Southwest State's Josh Soupir earned victories over two ranked opponents is SSU's first home meet of the year to help the Mustangs gain a split with Dana and Dakota Wesleyan.
Southwest began Saturday's match with Dana winning two of the first three weight classes but dropping the next five to allow Dana to take a 24-16 victory in the dual. SSU's Soupir (So., 133) knocked off Dana's Pete Isham 12-2 to gain the major decision over his ranked opponent.
The Mustangs took on Dakota Wesleyan later in the day and owned the match from the outset. SSU won eight of ten weight classes with their only losses coming at 149 and 157. Soupir earned his second victory over a ranked opponent on the day by winning 6-4 over Justin Portenier.
Along with Soupir, the Mustangs had three other wrestlers go 2-0 on the weekend. At 141, freshman Keefer Jensen earned two victories. One came by a pin at 3:46 over Dakota Wesleyan's Justin Hood. Cody Kummer (197 lb.) and Mark Simmonds (HWT) also went 2-0 with one fall on the weekend.
With the split on Saturday, SSU is now 4-9 in duals heading into the Central Missouri State Duals next weekend.
Head Coach John Sterner
John Sterner, a 1990 graduate of Southwest State, will begin his fourth season at the helm of the Mustang wrestling program. Sterner knows what it takes to be successful on the mat. He was SSU's first ever national champion, taking home first place honors at 190 lbs. at the 1989 NAIA Championships.
Sterner was named as the NSIC's Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Mustangs to the NSIC championship. John served as the head football coach at Marshall High School for two years. He holds a degree in Art Education and lives with his wife Tracy and son Elijah.
