St. Cloud State Wrestling Update

UPCOMING MEETS: The Huskies (4-5, 1-2 NCC) will travel to #16 Northern Colorado on Feb. 1, in Greeley, Colo. for an 8 p.m. match. On Feb. 2, the Huskies will travel to Omaha, Neb. for a 7 p.m. match at #3 Nebraska-Omaha.

LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.

THE RESULTS: In one of the team's biggest dual wins of the season, the Huskies charted a 30-18 thumping of #12 South Dakota State on Jan. 25, in St. Cloud. SCSU took advantage of two forfeits and a default win by Derek Miller at 125, to charge to the lead. #5 Dustin Darveaux gained a big pinfall win over Lucas Teigen of SDSU at heavyweight, while #8 ranked Jon Duncombe posted a :57 pin over SDSU's Scott King at 174. Matt Neumueller (165) and Blake Christopherson (149) each gained forfeit wins...on Jan. 26, the Huskies dropped a tough 25-16 loss to #7 Augustana College in St. Cloud. Wins for the Huskies were posted by Paul Breth (197) with a 7-1 win, Dan Duch (157) with a 4:30 fall over #8 Seth Webster of Augie, Matt Neumueller with a 3-2 win, and Nate Whiting with a 15-2 win at 184. In a showdown between top ranked big men, Darveaux lost to AC's #2 ranked James Garvey 8-3.

TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the fifth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (25-6) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 15-10 this year. He was ranked #8 in the last DII polls... Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 19-10 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (59-57 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...SCSU received votes in the last DII national poll.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 59-57 overall/21-35 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
