St. Cloud State University update
 
UPCOMING MEETS: The Huskies (4-7, 1-4 NCC) will travel to #5 MSU, Mankato on Friday, Feb. 8, for a 7:30 p.m. meet in Mankato against the Mavericks.
 
LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.
 
THE RESULTS: The Huskies returned from a rugged western swing with a pair of losses to #16 Northern Colorado and #3 Nebraska-Omaha. On Feb. 1, the Huskies dropped a tough 21-13 loss at UNC. SCSU athlete posting wins at UNC were Nate Whiting at 184, #5 Dustin Darveaux at heavyweight, Derek Miller at 125, and #8 Jon Duncombe at 174. On Feb. 2, the Huskies moved their show to UNO and lost a 34-3 match to the Mavericks. The lone SCSU wrestler to win was Darveaux, who gained an 8-4 win over UNO's Lance Tolstedt at heavyweight. At 174-pounds, Duncombe lost a thrilling 5-4 decision to #4 Bob Edmonds.
 
TEAM NOTES: Talk about a tough schedule. From Jan. 25-Feb. 8, the Huskies will wrestle five consecutive opponents ranked among the nation's top 16 teams at the DII level. SCSU has already wrestled 7 teams this season ranked in the top 25 at the DII level and the nation's top ranked DIII team (Augsburg). Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the fifth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (27-6) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 16-11 this year. He was ranked #8 in the last DII polls... Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 20-11 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (59-59 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...SCSU received votes in the last DII national poll.
 
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 59-59 overall/21-37 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
