St. Cloud State Wrestling Update

UPCOMING MEETS: The #20 Huskies (4-8, 1-5 NCC) will host St. John's University on Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m., before hitting the road to #18 MSU, Moorhead for a dual match on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.

LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.

THE RESULTS: On Feb. 8, the Huskies dropped a tough 26-16 match against #5 ranked MSU, Mankato in Mankato. #5 ranked heavyweight Dustin Darveaux was impressive for the Huskies with a big 15-6 victory over MSUM's Paul Svien. At 125-pounds, Derek Miller won 10-2 and Matt Neumueller gained a solid 13-5 major decision win at 165-pounds. To complete the loop, Nate Whiting posted a 10-0 victory at 184-pounds.

TEAM NOTES: Talk about a tough schedule. From Jan. 25-Feb. 8, the Huskies wrestled five consecutive opponents ranked among the nation's top 16 teams at the DII level. On Feb. 15, the Huskies will wrestle #18 MSU, Moorhead...SCSU has already wrestled 8 teams this season ranked in the top 25 at the DII level and the nation's top ranked DIII team (Augsburg). Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the fifth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (28-6) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 16-12 this year. He was ranked #8 in the last DII polls... Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 21-11 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (59-60 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...The Huskies moved back into the DII national poll with a #20 national ranking in the latest poll released last week.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 59-60 overall/21-38 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
