#20 St. Cloud State Update

UPCOMING MEETS: The #20 Huskies (6-8, 1-5 NCC) will compete at the 2002 North Central Conference championships on Sunday, Feb. 24. The matches begin at 9 a.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D. on the campus of Augustana College.
LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.
THE RESULTS: The Huskies enjoyed a winning week on Feb. 11-16. To start the action off, SCSU posted a 21-17 win over Stearns County rival St. John's University on Feb. 13. In front of a motivated Halenbeck audience, the Huskies gained wins by HWT Dustin Darveaux (:26 pinfall), 141 Joe Sathre, 165 Matt Neumueller, 174 Jon Duncombe and 184 Nate Whiting. On Feb. 15, the Huskies gained one a 19-16 win at MSU, Moorhead. This match was a barnburner. Down 16-0 after losing the first five matches of the meet, SCSU charged back starting with a 13-5 win by Neumueller at 165. Duncombe bounced back with a 6-4 win at 174 and Whiting gained a big 8-4 win over #7 Ryan Kopiasz at 184. Paul Breth continued the roll with a tough 3-0 win at 197, and Darveaux added the needed points with a 1:19 pinfall win at HWT.
TEAM NOTES: Talk about a tough schedule. From Jan. 25-Feb. 15, the Huskies wrestled six opponents ranked among the nation's top 18 teams at the DII level...SCSU has already wrestled 9 teams this season ranked in the top 25 at the DII level and the nation's top ranked DIII team (Augsburg). Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the fifth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (30-6) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 18-12 this year. He was ranked #8 in the last DII polls... Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 23-11 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors...Coach Steve Grimit (61-60 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...The Huskies moved back into the DII national poll with a #20 national ranking in the latest poll released last week.
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 61-60 overall/21-38 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
