Two Mustangs Named All-NSIC
The Southwest State Wrestling team had one first place and one second place finisher in the NSIC Touranament last weekend. Cody Kummer was SSU's only champion at 197 lbs. The senior from Watford City, ND earned his first win by fall in 0:21 and his second win in the championship round in just 0:37 seconds. Josh Soupir was the Mustang's other All-NSIC honoree as he finished in second place at 133 lbs. Soupir, a sophomore from Marshall,MN, earned a 3-1 decision and a 20-2 technical fall before losing in the championship round 6-5 to Northern State's Richard Goethals.
Kummer Named NSIC Wrestler of the Week Feb. 5, 2002
Cody Kummer of Southwest State University has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestler of the Week. A 197-pound senior from Watford City, ND, Kummer collected a pair of victories last week, including a fall against Jeremy Murphy of Augustana College. Kummer is 16-7 on the season, and has posted five victories in the his last six dual matches. -Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
Head Coach John Sterner
John Sterner, a 1990 graduate of Southwest State, is in his fourth season at the helm of the Mustang wrestling program. Sterner was SSU's first ever national champion, taking home first place honors at 190 lbs. at the 1989 NAIA Championships. Sterner was named as the NSIC's Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Mustangs to the NSIC championship. John served as the head football coach at Marshall High School for two years.
SSU Falls to Nationally Ranked SDSU, UNO
Southwest State was toppled by national powers No. 12 South Dakota State (28-19) and No. 3 Nebraska-Omaha (41-6) last week. Jared Field (125), Josh Soupir (133), Keefer Jensen (141) and Matt Tiffany (174) all earned wins over SDSU opponents with Soupirs coming by fall. Soupir also recorded the only win over Nebraska-Omaha with a pin in 2:52.
