Augsburg aiming for eighth NCAA Division III national championship this weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (2/25/02) - The Augsburg College wrestling team will attempt to win its NCAA-record eighth Division III national championship in the last 12 seasons this weekend at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Action begins on Friday and will conclude on Saturday.

Augsburg, the two-time defending NCAA Division III national champions and winners of seven of the last 11 national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001), has been ranked No. 1 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll all season long. In fact, Augsburg has not surrendered the top ranking in the NWCA national poll since early in the 1999-2000 season.

In the final poll, released on Feb. 19, Augsburg has individuals ranked in the top eight nationally in seven of the 10 weight classes, including four top-ranked wrestlers -- defending national titlist and three-time All-American Darin Bertram (Sr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS) at 125 pounds, 1999 national titlist and two-time All-American John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) at 133 pounds, 2001 All-American Tony Abbott (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) at 165 pounds and 2000 national titlist and two-time All-American Nick Slack (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) at 174 pounds.

Ricky Crone (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) is ranked second at 184, Kevin Rasmussen (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) is rated third at 197 and Brad Fisher (Sr., Austin, Minn.) is ranked fourth at 141. Other Auggie qualifiers are Jamell Tidwell (Fr., Richfield, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) at 149, and Jeremy Jirele (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) at 157 and Mike Flanagan (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Thomas Academy HS) at heavyweight.

Augsburg is the only Division III team, and one of seven teams in NCAA wrestling history (all divisions) to win seven national titles (Oklahoma State's 30 team national titles in Division I is the record; Iowa has won 20, Iowa State has won eight, Oklahoma has won seven, Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo has won eight in Division II and Cal State-Bakersfield has won eight in Division II).

Augsburg won its 16th straight MIAC championship on Saturday (2/23), earning 10 individual titlists for the second time in championship history and qualifying all 10 wrestlers to the NCAA championship meet for the fifth season in a row. Augsburg has won 26 of the last 28 MIAC titles.

Augsburg is the only team in the country to qualify all 10 individuals to the national meet. Wartburg, which won national titles twice in the 1990s (1999, 1996) and finished second to Augsburg five times in the last nine years, has the second-most national-meet qualifiers, nine. Wartburg is ranked third in the final pre-NCAA championship national ranking. Wisconsin-La Crosse, rated second and last year's national runner-up, has six qualifiers, as does No. 4 Upper Iowa and No. 10 College of New Jersey. Four schools have five qualifiers -- No. 7 Buena Vista (Iowa), No. 11 Ithaca (N.Y.), No. 12 Western Maryland and No. 13 Pacific (Ore.).

The national meet has four sessions. Friday's two sessions (10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Eastern time) determine the eight All-Americans at each weight class. Semifinals are Saturday at 11 a.m., with the final matches set for 5 p.m.

Augsburg will provide continuous updates on its website at http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/wrestling/ during the tournament.

Augsburg's wrestling team has dominated small-college competition in last decade.

  • Augsburg's wrestling team is currently rated No. 1 in the nation in the NWCA Division III national rankings and is attempting to win its record-eighth NCAA Division III national title. The national championships will be held at First Union Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., March 1-2. The Auggies finished 16-0 in dual meets this season, extending its two-season dual-meet winning streak to 24. It is just the 12th time in school history that Augsburg has had an unbeaten dual-meet season, and first since the 1994-95 season.
  • Against opponents from Divisions II and III, Augsburg is 165-7 since the 1989-90 season, and has lost just two matches to non-Division I opponents since the 1995-96 season -- both to Division II opponents (19-17 to North Dakota State in the 1999-2000 season and 25-13 to Minnesota State-Mankato in the 1995-96 season).
  • Against strictly NCAA Division III opponents, Augsburg is 196-13 since the 1979-80 season. Augsburg has a current 71-match winning streak against Division III opponents; its last loss to a Division III foe was a 26-16 loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Feb. 11, 1994. Since the 1989-90 season, Augsburg is 120-3 against Division III opponents.
  • Against opponents from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Augsburg is 181-2 since the 1975-76 season. In winning each of the 12 MIAC Team Dual Meet tournaments (including this season's 4-0 championship), Augsburg has outscored its conference opponents by a 2,985-124 margin in going 62-0. Augsburg has a 16-season, 82-match dual-meet winning streak against MIAC opponents. This season, Augsburg outscored their league opponents 214-0 in four matches; Augsburg beat host Concordia 50-0, topped Carleton 58-0, St. Olaf 56-0 and St. John's 50-0.

Augsburg is the most dominant wrestling team in Minnesota.

  • The Auggies have won seven NCAA Division III national championships in the last 11 years (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001), the most in Division III history and just one of seven teams among all NCAA Divisions to win at least six national championships. Augsburg also finished second four times in the 1990s, in the top four nationally the last 13 seasons in a row and in the top 20 nationally (NCAA from 1983 to present, NAIA pre-1983) every year since 1971. Among NCAA schools in all divisions, only the University of Iowa and Augsburg have finished in the top two nationally in 11 of the past 12 years.
  • Augsburg has won the last 16 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team championships in a row, 26 of the last 28 and 29 titles overall since 1968 (30 total championships since 1961). Augsburg has also won all 12 MIAC Team Dual Meet tournaments held.
  • Minnesota has had a reputation of being the "state of hockey." In fact, it could also be properly termed the "state of wrestling." Augsburg has won seven NCAA Division III national titles, including the last two in a row; Minnesota won the Division I national title for the first time last season, and North Dakota State, with nine of its 10 championship-team wrestlers from Minnesota, has won the last two Division II national titles.

Augsburg has a record of individual success nationally, both on the mat and in the classroom.

  • Since Pat Marcy won the school's first NAIA national title at 150 pounds in 1972, Augsburg wrestlers have earned 29 individual national championships, including 25 Division III national titles, the second-most in Division III history. Montclair State (N.J.), which has competed in every Division III tournament since it began in 1974 (Augsburg has only been in NCAA Division III since 1983) has 26 individual national titles.
  • Augsburg has three individuals who have won national titles on the current roster -- Darin Bertram (Sr., Herman, Minn./Herman-Norcross HS) at 125 (2001); Nick Slack (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) at 174 (2000), and John Marchette (Sr., Canual Fulton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover HS) at 133 (1999). Five Auggies have won multiple national titles in the program's history -- John Beatty (1998, 1990), Gary Kroells (1992, 1993), Dan Lewandowski (1996, 1997), Henry Gerten (1997, 1998) and Ben Bauer (2000, 2001).
  • Augsburg College has also been a success in the classroom. Over the past 19 seasons, Augsburg has produced 67 National College Wrestling Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans, the most of any college in any division in the nation. Augsburg had seven Scholar All-Americans last season. Over the past four seasons the NWCA has awarded Division III academic team national championships, Augsburg has finished second twice and first once (1998-99). Last season, the Auggies finished fourth with a team grade-point average of 3.372 (4.00 scale). Augsburg is the only college to finish in the top 10 both on the mat and in the academic race in each of the four years of the academic team national title program. Augsburg has also had five Verizon Academic All-Americans, awarded by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) - Dan Lewandowski (1996-97), Josh Cagle (1998-99 and 1999-2000), Jim Peterson (1998-99) and Brian Jones (1999-2000).

Head Coach Jeff Swenson

  • Head coach Jeff Swenson (Augsburg '79) is in his 20th season as Augsburg's head coach (23 seasons overall in wrestling coaching) and has a career dual-meet record of 285-32. He is one of a handful of wrestling coaches in the nation to win at least 250 matches as a coach and 100 as a college wrestler. He was a three-time All-American and an NAIA national champion at 167 pounds in 1979, finishing his collegiate career with a 102-17 competitive record. Swenson has earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors 12 times, and has earned NWCA National Coach of the Year honors five times (1983, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000).
  • During his tenure as Augsburg's head coach (1981-84, 1987-present), Swenson has coached 112 All-Americans, 26 individual national champions, while his teams have won seven national titles (1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001) and 19 MIAC team championships. Under his commitment to academic as well as athletic success, Swenson's Auggies have earned 67 NWCA Scholar All-America honors, as well as earning the academic national team championship in 1999 (second in 1998 and 2000, fourth in 2001). No other school has finished in the top 10 both academically and on the mat in the four seasons of the NWCA academic team award.
