St. Cloud State update

UPCOMING MEETS: St. Cloud State (6-8 overall, 1-5 NCC duals) will be represented at the upcoming NCAA Division II championships on March 8-9, at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.

LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.

THE RESULTS: The Huskies placed 7th at the 2002 NCC wrestling championships, which were held in Sioux Falls, S.D. SCSU posted 15.5 points, while NDSU captured first with 67 points. UNO (67.0), SDSU (55.5), Augustana (47), Mankato (42) and Northern Colorado (19.5) completed the field. At the tournament, #6 ranked Dustin Darveaux was 2-2 and placed 4th at heavyweight. He qualified for the NCAA Division II tournament for the 3rd consecutive season...at 184, Nate Whiting went 2-2 and also placed fourth. He qualfied for nationals for the second consecutive season...at 174, rookie Jon Duncombe was 2-2 and placed fourth. He will join Whiting and Darveaux at the NCAA met...others placers included Matt Neumueller (6th at 165), Paul Breth (6th at 197), Derek Miller (5th at 125), Jon Dirksen (6th at 133) and Blake Christopherson (6th at 149).

TEAM NOTES: Talk about a tough schedule. From Jan. 25-Feb. 15, the Huskies wrestled six opponents ranked among the nation's top 18 teams at the DII level...SCSU has already wrestled 9 teams this season ranked in the top 25 at the DII level and the nation's top ranked DIII team (Augsburg). Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the sixth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (32-8) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season. At the DII Duals, Darveaux gained a 4-1 win over #6 ranked Willie McGowan of CMSU..Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 20-14 this year. He was ranked #8 in the last DII polls... Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 23-11 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors...Coach Steve Grimit (61-60 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...earlier in the season, SCSU was ranked 20th nationally. In the last poll, SCSU received votes.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 61-60 overall/21-38 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
