Duncombe, Darveaux Place 4th at Nationals

The St. Cloud State Huskies completed the 2002 NCAA Division II wrestling championships with a 15th place finish. Junior heavyweight Dustin Darveaux placed fourth at the tournament, while freshman Jon Duncombe placed fourth at 174-pounds. Both gained All-America honors for their work at nationals.
At 174, Duncombe opened his second day with a 4-2 loss to Todd Fuller of NDSU, before coming back with a 3-1 win over Tom Bauer of Ashland. In the bout for third place, Duncombe lost 7-5 to Tom Meester of Augustana.
At heavyweight, Darveaux defeated Cody Beguin of Chadron State 12-3 and then beat Dupree Lacey of Central Washington 16-5. In the match for third place, Darveaux dropped a tough 6-2 decision to James Garvey of Augstana.
In first day action at the 2002 NCAA Division II championships, St. Cloud State University freshman Jon Duncombe gained a pair of wins at 174-pounds. Duncombe opened action with a 5-2 win over James Tietema of Findlay and later posted a big 3-1 win over Frank Kuchera of Nebraska-Kearney.
In action at 184-pounds, SCSU's Nate Whiting suffered a 7-2 loss to Jeff Henning of Central Oklahoma. He came back with a solid 2-0 win over Mark Dubrovich (Colo. School of Mines). In the third round of wrestlebacks, Whiting dropped a close 2-1 decision to Zach Stalder (Nebraska Omaha). In the heavyweight bracker, SCSU's Dustin Darveaux lost 16-8 in first round play to Josh Hendricks of Ashland. Darveaux stayed alive thanks to a quick pin at :43 against Ryan Deprey (Wisconsin Parkside). In the third round of the wrestlebacks, Darveaux posted a solid 5-4 win over Willie McGowan of Central Missouri State.
