Mavericks sign two to national letters-of-intent

Mankato, Minn.. --- Minnesota State head wrestling coach Jim Makovsky has announced that that Ben Janike and Jason Rhoten have signed national letters-of-intent to wrestle at MSU during the 2002-03 season.

Ben Janike capped off his senior year at Waseca High School with the Minnesota Class AA heavyweight championship and a spotless 36-0 record. Coach Makovsky states, "Ben is one of the hardest working wrestlers we came across during the recruiting process. We were equally impressed by him becoming a state champion despite giving up 50 pounds to most of his competitors. Ben comes from a very supportive family and we look forward to seeing them in the stands supporting Ben and the Maverick wrestling program."

Another state champion will be wearing purple and gold as well. Jason Rhoten improved from a third-place finish as a junior to claim the 140-pound title last season while competing for Kasson-Mantorville. He racked up a career record of 164-28 including a 43-1 mark as a senior. He is also a two-time Academic All-State selection. "Jason excelled on the mat and in the classroom," Makovsky said. "He is a very talented wrestler and he has the desire, work ethic and passion that the top one percent of collegiate wrestlers possess."
