The Huskies will compete at the University of Northern Iowa Open on Dec. 1. The tournament will be held on the campus of University of Norhtern Iowa.
LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.
THE RESULTS: Nine Huskies competed in the Ryan Kaufman Open at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. The meet did not include team statistics. Dustin Darveaux placed fourth in the meet going 4-2 in his matches. Darveaux lost by a decision 5-4 in the third place match to Augustana's James Garvey. Three other Huskies won two matches including Matt Neumueller, Mike Dumcombe and Nate Whitiing.
TEAM NOTES: Coach Steve Grimit (55-52 in 8 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year...Paul Arens, an All-American in 2000-01, will serve as an assistant coach this year at
SCSU...Dustin Darveaux prepped for the new season by winning first place in the heavyweight class at the Williamson Open at SDSU on Nov. 3, 2001. In the title match, he defeated Cain Velasquez of Iowa Central by a tally of 6-4. Darveaux was 4-0 at the meet. In his career, Darveaux is 71-26 at the heavyweight spot. In 2000, Darveaux was third at the Williamson Open and he was third in the open division at the Kaufman Open last year...Matt Neumueller (157 pounds) was 33-14 last year and Darveaux was 37-13. The pair were the team's top two grapplers last winter in terms of matches won. Neumueller looks to move up to 165-pounds this season.
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 55-52 overall/20-33 NCC record during the last 8 seasons.
