St. Cloud State Wrestling News and Notes
 
UPCOMING MEETS: The Huskies will take a break for the holidays before returning to action on Jan. 8, with a home match against defending NCAA Division III champion Augsburg College. The match in Halenbeck Hall will start at 7 p.m. Remember, all SCSU home matches this season are open to the public and admission is free for all spectators. Come on out to see some of the best in NCAA wrestling.
 
LAST YEAR: The Huskies (8-7, 2-4 NCC) completed their year with a 14th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Greeley, Colo. on March 9-10. In 1999-00, SCSU placed 27th. The Huskies finished the 1999-00 season at 9-9 in dual meet action, and 2-4 in the NCC.
 
THE RESULTS: The Huskies showed well at the recent SCSU Invitational on Dec. 8. Junior Dustin Darveaux gained first place honors in the heavyweight bracket with a perfect 4-0 record, which included three pins and a major decision in the title match against SW State's Mark Simmonds. Third place finishes at the 16-team tournament went to Jon Duncombe (174) and Matt Neumueller (165). Nate Whiting (184) was fourth at the invite and Dan Duch placed fifth at 157. As a team, SCSU placed fourth with 85.5 points, while NDSU won the meet with 150.5. Augusburg (148.5) and Mary (89.0) completed the top three...on Dec. 11, the Huskies opened their dual meet season with a solid win over #16 ranked Southwest State at Halenbeck Hall. Darveaux opened action with a win followed by a win from Derek Miller at 125. SSU came back with three wins before Dan Duch gained an 8-2 win at 157. Neumueller (165) and Duncombe (174) padded the lead with pins, while Whiting (184) iced the match with a 15-3 win.
 
TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux was named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 11, for his efforts in the SCSU Invitational. He is currently the sixth ranked heavyweight in Division II wrestling. Darveaux (19-4) this season has won tournament titles at SDSU and SCSU this season...Jon Duncombe gained a second place finish at the Bison Open this year and is 11-6 this year...Matt Neumueller continues to impress with a 16-6 record. Neumueller, Whiting and Darveaux were NCAA qualifiers last year. Darveaux placed 7th at the 2001 NCAA meet and gained All-America honors, along with teammates Paul Arens and Paul Wren. Arens serves as an assistant coach for the Huskies this season...Coach Steve Grimit (56-52 in 9 seasons) won his 50th career dual match with the Huskies' 22-17 dual win over UNC last year.
 
COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 56-52 overall/20-33 NCC record during the last 9 seasons.
