Minnesota State Mankato Update

Last Week: The Minnesota State wrestling team (0-1, 0-0 NCC) had six wrestlers reach the finals at the Mike McReady Open on the campus of Upper Iowa University in Fayette on Saturday. Junior Cory Beckman (New Hampton, Iowa) claimed the title at 157 pounds with a fall over Cory Connell of the University of Iowa in 5:10. Beckman transferred to MSU at the beginning of this season after wrestling one season at Upper Iowa and placing third at the NCAA Division III tournament for the Peacocks. Five other Mavericks reached the finals and claimed second place. Junior Tony Fratzke (Hutchinson, Minn.) dropped a 17-10 decision to Iowa's Cliff Moore in the 133 championship bout but racked up two falls to reach that match. Junior Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) lost a 7-2 decision in the finals to former Blue Earth Area High School standout Ty Eustice of Iowa. At 165, Junior Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) carded two major decision wins before falling in the finals 7-2. At 174, freshman Matt Perrizo (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) also carded a pair of falls on his way to the championship bout but fell to unattached Mike Cuningham, 16-9. Returning national qualifier Joel Schrimpf (Goodhue, Minn.) was on the losing end of a 3-1 decision in the finals at 184 pounds. The junior earned a fall and a major decision. Overall, the Mavericks came home with 16 placewinners, their most on the season.

What's Next: The Mavericks are off for holiday break until Jan. 12 when they travel to face the defending conference and national champion North Dakota State Bison. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Coach Makovsky: Jim Makovsky is in his ninth season at the helm of the Minnesota State, Mankato wrestling team. The Mavericks are 99-43-2 under Makovsky and his career record stands at 124-62-4. Makovsky is a 1989 graduate of Valley City State University where he served as head coach for four seasons prior to his arrival at MSU. Makovsky has tutored 30 All-Americans in his career and seven national champions, including Matt Petsinger last season.

Fall Guys: As a team, the Mavericks combined for 20 falls at the Mike McReady Open on Saturday. Joel Schrimpf came in with the fastest pin of the day, a 48-second triumph over Nick Kelly of Kirkwood.

Mavericks In National Rankings: In the Division II national team poll, the Mavericks are ranked fifth, behind North Dakota State, Central Oklahoma, Nebraska-Omaha and Ashland. Lester Berrios (Miami, Fla.) is fourth at 125 and Adam Kramer (New Hampton, Iowa) is fourth at 141. Hannon Hisek (Tyndall, S.D.) is rated seventh at 149 and two-time All-American Matt Gadient (Goodhue, Minn.) is fourth at 165.
