Mustangs Drop duals with St. Cloud, NDSU
The Mustangs came up on the short end of their last two duals when they were defeated 26-16 by St. Cloud State and 38-6 by No. 1 North Dakota State. In the St. Cloud match, Josh Soupir won a 5-2 decision after trailing 0-2 early in the match. SSU's Jared Cooley collected his second win of the season with a 12-4 decision while Cody Kummer recorded his sixth win and his fourth pin of the year.
Southwest's Jared Cooley and Mark Simmonds were the only winners in a hard-fought match against North Dakota State. Cooley won a 9-3 decision and Simmonds won 2-1. The Mustangs are now 2-6 in dual meets this season.
Southwest State will attempt to rebound with their first home match of the season when they host No. 7 South Dakota State on January 5.
About South Dakota State
Last year's Jackrabbits finished in second place in the National Meet and came within a few points of North Dakota State in the team standings.
The No. 7 Jacks currently have six players ranked nationally including Aaron Veskrna at 157 pounds, 165-pounder Tyler Bryant, 184-pounder Tyler Jones and heavyweight Jon Madsen allare ranked second in their weight classes. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Roe ranks fifth at 141 pounds, while Todd Paszek is fourth at 197 pounds.
Head Coach John Sterner
John Sterner, a 1990 graduate of Southwest State, will begin his fourth season at the helm of the Mustang wrestling program. Sterner knows what it takes to be successful on the mat. He was SSU's first ever national champion, taking home first place honors at 190 lbs. at the 1989 NAIA Championships.
Sterner was named as the NSIC's Coach of the Year in 2001 after leading the Mustangs to the NSIC championship. John served as the head football coach at Marshall High School for two years. He holds a degree in Art Education and lives with his wife Tracy and son Elijah.
SSU, Cooley Recognized in NCAA II The Southwest State Mustangs dropped out of the NCAA II Wrestling Coaches' Top 20 Poll but still received votes in the Dec. 12 poll. The Mustangs, who were ranked No. 16 in the last poll dropped out after losses to St. Cloud State and North Dakota State.
SSU's Jared Cooley was ranked second in the nation at 149 pounds. Cooley has compiled a 3-1 record this season after being honored as one of SSU's two All-Americans a year ago.
