St. Cloud State update

UPCOMING ACTION: The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (0-3, 0-1 NCC) will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Division II Duals Tour-nament on Jan. 18-19. The Huskies will open action on Jan. 18, with a dual match against #7 ranked San Francisco State.

LAST YEAR: St. Cloud State (6-8 overall, 1-5 NCC duals) completed its 2001-02 season with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division II cham-pionships on March 8-9, at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.

THE RESULTS: #15 Northern Colorado posted a 24-13 dual meet victory over host St. Cloud State University on Friday, Jan. 10, in St. Cloud. The Bears gained wins in the first five matches of the meet, before SCSU got into the win column with a 3-2 win by #3 ranked Matt Neumueller (Medford, Wis.) over UNC's Jared Deaguero at 165-pounds. UNC's Tanner Linsacum charted a 10-7 win over Tate Wheeler at 174-pounds before the Huskies won the final three bouts. At 184-pounds, #4 ranked sophomore Jon Duncombe (St. Michael/Albertville) gained am 11-5 win over Cole Allison. At 197-pounds, SCSU junior Luke Pohlmeier (Annandale) scored a big 12-3 win over UNC's Jeremy Gilkerson. To complete the meet, #2 senior heavyweight Dustin Darveaux improved to 23-1 on the season with an 8-4 win over UNC's Dusty Hoffschneider.

TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux set a new team record for career wins with his 2-1 win at Northern State. Darveaux is 23-1 this season and now owns a 128-37 career record, which bypasses the record of 126 wins set by Andy Reigstad, who had 126 from 1993-97. Darveaux had 38 wins in 2001-02, which tied the team record for most wins in a season along with Reigstad (1993-94) and Gene Hanemann (1994-95). Darveaux has won an impressive four tournament titles in 2002-03 (Williamson Open, the Bison Open, Northern Iowa Open and the SCSU Invitational), which is one short of the current team record...in the latest NCAA DII rankings, Darveaux is ranked #2 at HWT, Jon Duncombe is ranked #4 at 174 and Matt Neumueller is ranked #3 at 165...Neumueller, the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 16, owns an 12-4 record this year...SCSU's other wrestler above .500 this season is 184-pounder Gerard Evans, who owns a 10-6 record this winter...Duncombe and Darveaux both qualified for nationals in 2002...Darveaux and Neumueller also qualified for nationals in 2001...the 2003 NCC championships will be held in Fargo, N.D. on March 2...the 2003 NCAA championships will be held in Wheeling, W.V. on March 14-15.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 10th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 61-63 overall/21- 39 NCC record during since 1993.
