St. Cloud State Wrestling Update

THE RESULTS: #11 ranked Minnesota State, Mankato gained a 36-6 dual match win over the Huskies on Jan. 29, in St. Cloud. The match's marquee bout featured a pair of nationally ranked grapplers at 165-pounds. SCSU's #1 Matt Neumueller was a 5-3 winner of #6 ranked Jake Emerick of MSUM. Neumueller used a reversal and late takedown to break a 2-2 deadlock going into the third period. SCSU also charted a 5-2 win by #2 Dustin Darveaux at the heavyweight spot over MSUM's Paul Svien...on Feb. 1, the Huskies dropped a tough 28-22 decision at Southwest State in Marshall. Darveaux gained his 9th pin of the season with a fall at 1:01 over SSU's Joel Wipperwurth at HWT. Neumueller also had a pin at 165, while Luke Pohlmeier gained a 14-4 major decision at 197.To complete the scoring, John Dirksen picked up six with a forfeit win at 141.
TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux set a new team record for career wins with his 2-1 win at Northern State. Darveaux is 28-2 this season and now owns a 133-38 career record, which bypasses the record of 126 wins set by Andy Reigstad, who had 126 from 1993-97. Darveaux had 38 wins in 2001-02, which tied the team record for most wins in a season along with Reigstad (1993-94) and Gene Hanemann (1994-95). Darveaux has won an impressive four tournament titles in 2002-03 (Williamson Open, the Bison Open, Northern Iowa Open and the SCSU Invitational), which is one short of the current team record. Of note, he lost just his second match of the season vs. UNO on Jan. 24...in the latest NCAA DII rankings, Matt Neumueller is ranked #1 at 165 and Darveaux is ranked #2 at HWT ...Neumueller, the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 16, owns an 18-4 record this year...the 2003 NCC championships will be held in Fargo, N.D. on March 2...the 2003 NCAA championships will be held in Wheeling, W.V. on March 14-15.
UPCOMING ACTION: The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (1-8, 0-3 NCC) will compete against a pair of non-conference rivals this week. On Feb. 4, the Huskies will travel to Minneapolis for a showdown against perennial Division III power Augsburg College. The dual will kick-off at 7 p.m. To complete the week, the Huskies will host Minnesota State, Moorhead on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. This dual match will be held in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall and admission is free. Plenty of good seats are available at the start of every match. LAST YEAR: St. Cloud State (6-8 overall, 1-5 NCC duals) completed its 2001-02 season with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships on March 8-9, at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
