NDSU Update

February 5, 2003

This week's assignment for North Dakota State's wrestling team will be tough, but maybe not as demanding as last week. In the span of five days, NDSU rallied late to beat three-time defending Division III champion Augsburg, got roughed up by the 14th-ranked Northern Iowa while getting a taste of Division I competition, and needed a tiebreaker to pick up a victory at third-ranked Nebraska-Omaha.

WHERE & WHEN:
No. 7-ranked North Dakota State (8-3 overall, 3-0 NCC) is at No. 11-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato for a North Central Conference dual Friday at 7 p.m. at Bresnan Arena in Mankato, MN.

THE SERIES:
This will be the 37th meeting between North Dakota State and Minnesota State-Mankato. NDSU holds a 29-6-1 advantage in the series, which dates back to the 1966-67 season. The Bison have won eight of the last 10 matches including six in a row over the Mavericks.

ABOUT MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO:
Minnesota State-Mankato is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Mavericks lost their last outing Saturday night at Minnesota State-Moorhead when the Dragons' Josh Jansen turned back Mankato's CORY BECKMAN 14-12 in overtime. That loss snapped the Mavericks' five-match winning streak. MSU-Mankato has North Central Conference wins over St. Cloud State (26-6 score) and Northern Colorado (28-11).

THE COACHES:
North Dakota State is coached by BUCKY MAUGHAN, who is in his 39th year at the helm of the Bison. Maughan is only the second full-time wrestling coach in the school's history. He has a 390-112-11 record to date in duals and has guided the Herd to 16 North Central Conference titles, four NCAA Division II championships, and 22 seasons of 10 or more wins in his 38 previous years.

JIM MAKOVSKY is in his 10th season at the helm of the Minnesota State-Mankato wrestling team. The Mavericks are 114-48-2 under Makovsky and his career record over 13-plus years stands at 139-67-4. Makovsky is a 1989 graduate of Valley City State University, where he served as head coach for four seasons prior to his arrival at MSUM. Makovsky has tutored 33 All-Americans in his career and seven national champions.

TOP TWO BATTLE
For the second time this year, North Dakota State 157-pounder PAUL CARLSON, ranked first in Division II, will meet the No. 2-ranked wrestler in his class. If the probable lineup holds, Carlson will square off against Minnesota State-Mankato's CORY BECKMAN on Friday.

Beckman took over the No. 2 spot which was held earlier this year by Northern Colorado's Brody Olson. Carlson edged Olson 3-1 as the Bison defeated the Bears 24-9 in January at the Bison Sports Arena.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING:
North Dakota State won 8 of 10 classes last year to cruise to a 28-11 win over Minnesota State-Mankato at the Bison Sports Arena. MIKE FIEDLER had a 3-2 decision over Matt Gadient, BRIAN KRAEMER scored a 10-3 decision over Mike Engelmann, MATT STRAWSER held off Lester Berrios by a 1-0 margin, and PAUL CARLSON won 6-4 over Cory Beckman. NDSU's REESE BOEHM lost by fall to Dustin Kulseth, and COLLIN KELLY lost by major decision (19-3) to Hannon Hisek.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK:
North Dakota State won the final three bouts to come from behind for a 21-12 win over three-time defending Division III champion Augsburg College last Tuesday in Fargo. BRIAN KRAEMER's decision tied the match at 12 before heavyweight JOE BRYCE got an overtime decision to put the Bison up by three. MATT STRAWSER sealed the victory with a pin at 125 pounds.

Strawser and PAUL CARLSON were the only two Bison wrestlers to pick up wins last Thursday at Northern Iowa in a 31-6 loss to the Panthers, the 14th-ranked team in Division I.

Three Nebraska-Omaha wrestlers ranked in the nation's top five in their respective weight classes posted consecutive victories Saturday to dissolve a 16-6 Bison lead and force a tiebreaker. Carlson's near fall at 157 pounds - the only such score of the night - gained North Dakota State the win.

PERSONAL WIN STREAK SNAPPED:
When Augsburg College's Marcus LeVesseur beat North Dakota State's PAUL CARLSON last Tuesday at the Bison Sports Arena, it snapped a 10-match winning streak for the Bison junior. The matchup was highly anticipated as both wrestlers were ranked No. 1 at 157 pounds - Carlson in Division II and LeVesseur in Division III. LeVesseur won the bout by decision, 10-3.

Carlson had a string of wins dating back to Dec. 14 when he swept through the St. Cloud State University Invitational with three victories. After a win against Northern Colorado, Carlson went 5-0 at the National Duals and then picked up another home win against South Dakota State.

Carlson's 10-match winning streak is the most consecutive wins any Bison wrestler has had this season.

WRESTLER OF THE WEEK:
North Dakota State University junior PAUL CARLSON was named the North Central Conference Wrestler of the Week on Jan. 21 for his performance at the NWCA National Duals in Columbus, OH.

Carlson, a 157-pounder from St. Francis, MN, went 5-0 at the tournament. He recorded two wins by decision, two by major decision, and one by technical fall. Carlson was tabbed the top Division II wrestler in the 16-team tournament by a vote of the participating coaches. Carlson outscored his opponents 55-15 in five bouts.

HERMANN OUT FOR YEAR:
North Dakota State lost the services of true freshman MATT HERMANN for the remainder of the year after the 184-pounder suffered a knee injury in his final bout at the St. Cloud State University Invitational on Dec. 14.

STRAWSER APPROACHING TOP 10 IN CAREER WINS:
North Dakota State senior 125-pounder MATT STRAWSER is set to crack the top 10 in career victories at NDSU. The Wadena, MN, product is six wins away from the tenth slot. He'll need a clean sweep of NDSU's four remaining duals and successful tournament action to accomplish the feat. Here's a look at the all-time victory leaders at North Dakota State...
