Golden Gophers announce 2002-03 wrestling schedule

The two-time defending NCAA Champion University of Minnesota wrestling team has released its regular season schedule for the 2002-03 campaign. The Golden Gophers play host to seven dual meets on the season, including the highlights on the schedule - battles versus the perennial national contenders Iowa and Oklahoma State. The sites for those duals are yet to be announced.

The season opens with the renewal of the Golden Gopher-Hawkeye rivalry as Iowa comes to town for a nonconference match-up on Friday, Nov. 15. Minnesota will then compete in the Bison Open (Nov. 16) and UNO Open (Nov. 23) before heading to Northern Illinois for the season's first road dual on Sunday, Nov. 24. In addition to Minnesota's home meet versus Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 3, the Maroon and Gold is set to face Virginia Tech, Embry Riddle, Lock Haven, Arizona State and Nebraska in the nonconference portion of the season. The Golden Gophers will skip Midlands this year in favor of the Las Vegas Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 6-7.

Following Minnesota's attempt for a third consecutive National Duals title in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 18-19, the Golden Gophers open the Big Ten season with a home dual versus Michigan State on Jan 25. Minnesota hosts a total of four conference meets this season, all at the Sports Pavilion. The Big Ten Championships are March 8-9, in Madison, Wis., and the NCAA Championships take place March 20-22, in Kansas City, Mo.
