Five Bison place at Kaufman-Brand Open

OMAHA, NE -- North Dakota State recorded a pair of third- and fifth-place titles at the 34-team, 600-wrestler Kaufman-Brand Open hosted by Nebraska-Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Senior 125-pounder MATT STRAWSER and freshman 184-pounder MATT HERMANN each garnered third-place honors, Bison heavyweight DUSTIN BENZ and 197-pounder DAN FLATAU each placed fifth, and BRIAN KRAEMER was sixth at 197.

No. 4-ranked Strawser earned a 6-5 win over the University of Iowa's Matt Shankey for third at 125 in the open division. Strawser (9-1) defeated Shankey twice Saturday, picking up a 5-3 decision in the second round of the championship bracket.

Hermann defeated Luther College's Wyatt Reyerson 3-1 for third place in the 20-and-under 184-pound class. The NDSU freshman improved to 7-2 on the year.

North Dakota State, ranked third in the preseason Division II poll, will wrestle its first dual meet of the year this Tuesday, Nov. 26. The Bison will be at Minnesota State Moorhead, and action there is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
