St. Cloud State update

UPCOMING ACTION: The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (0-1) will enjoy a break until Jan. 8, at which time it will travel to Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. for a 7:30 p.m. match.

LAST YEAR: St. Cloud State (6-8 overall, 1-5 NCC duals) completed its 2001-02 season with a 15th place finish at the NCAA Division II championships on March 8-9, at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.

THE RESULTS: Senior Matt Neumueller posted a perfect 3-0 record at the 2002 SCSU Invitational on Dec. 14, which helped him gain first place honors at 165-pounds and also bring home the tournament MVP award. Neumueller was later named the NCC Wrestler of the Week on Dec. 17. Neumueller won the title with a 7-2 win over #3 Mike Fiedler of NDSU...at heavyweight, #2 Dustin Darveaux also won a title with a 4-0 record. He claimed the top spot with a 5-3 win over Baron Blanchard of Northern State...fifth place finishes at the tournament were posted for the Huskies by Derek Miller at 133 and Gerard Evans at 184. Blake Christopherson was sixth at 149...as a team, SCSU placed fifth with a score of 58.0, while NDSU won the title with 132.5 points and Augsburg was second in field of 13 with 127 points.

TEAM NOTES: Dustin Darveaux (21-1) has won an impressive four tournament titles in 2002-03 (SDSU, NDSU, Northern Iowa and SCSU). Darveaux now has a 125-37 career record. He only needs 2 wins to move ahead of school record holder Andy Reigstad, who had 126 from 1993-97. Darveaux had 38 wins in 2001-02, which tied the team record for most wins in a season along with Reigstad (1993-94) and Gene Hanemann (1994-95)...Matt Neumueller now has an 85-54 career record at SCSU, and his title on Dec. 14 marked the second time in his career that he has gained an invitational/tournament title. Neumueller also gained top honors at the Midwest Classic in 2001...Jon Duncombe and Darveaux gained All-America honors at nationals in 2002, which is the 48th and 49th time SCSU has gained All-America NCAA Division II honors. Darveaux was also an AA in 2001 with a 7th place finish...Darveaux and Duncombe both placed fourth in the nation last year at the NCAA meet...Darveaux has won tournament titles this season at the 2002 Williamson Open at SDSU and the 2002 Bison Open at NDSU...make plans now to attend the annual SCSU Invitational. This tournament will feature several of the top NCAA DII and DIII programs in the nation and it will be held on Dec. 14, with action starting at 9 a.m. in Halenbeck Hall.

COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 10th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 61-61 overall/21-38 NCC record during since 1993.
