Oklahoma State dumps Minnesota, 26-6, at Target Center

Minneapolis, Minn. &endash; The third-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team dropped its second dual meet of the season, falling to top-ranked Oklahoma State, 26-6, tonight in the Ice Dual at downtown Minneapolis' Target Center. The Cowboys won eight of 10 matches, but the Golden Gophers won the featured match of the night at 133 pounds as third-ranked Ryan Lewis avenged his 2002 NCAA title match loss to top-ranked and undefeated Johnny Thompson.

Minnesota, 2-2 overall, suffered its worst defeat since Feb. 8, 1992, when Penn State downed the Maroon and Gold, 39-0. The defeat also marked Minnesota's first two-loss season since 1999-2000 when the Golden Gophers went 17-2-0.

The meet began at 149 pounds with second-ranked Jared Lawrence getting Minnesota off to a good start with a 7-2 win over #7 Jerrod Sanders. Lawrence, 8-1 overall, tallied an early takedown and did not allow a OSU point until the third period. Lawrence registered over two minutes of advantage time to rebound from his loss to top-ranked Eric Larkin of Arizona State at the Las Vegas Invite. The Cowboys won the next seven matches to convincingly put away the Ice Dual title.

OSU opened the rout with an upset at 157 pounds as #5 Shane Roller downed top-ranked Luke Becker, 9-5. Roller took an early 2-0 lead and never allowed Becker to come back, tallying four takedowns and one minute of advantage time for his first win over the Golden Gopher. Becker suffered his first loss of the season to drop to 8-1. The loss also snapped his 27-match winning streak. The Cowboys kept rolling with second-ranked Tyrone Lewis edging #3 Jacob Volkmann, 7-6. Lewis led 7-3 after two periods, but ran out of gas in the third, allowing Volkmann to score points by an escape and two stalling calls. Lewis held on to win to give OSU a 6-3 lead.

At 174 pounds, #2 Chris Pendleton defeated #10 Josh McLay, 7-3, breaking a 3-3 tie in the second with four consecutive points. Pendleton finished the match with 3:58 of advantage time. The Cowboys pulled another upset at 184 pounds as #16 Jake Rosholt shut-out #4 Damion Hahn in the Golden Gopher's first match of the season. Oklahoma State added four team points at 197 pounds behind #5 Muhammed Lawal's 22-9 major decision win over Eli Ross. Lawal tallied 10 takedowns and only allowed escapes to give OSU a 16-3 lead.

The upsets continued at heavyweight as unranked Wille Gruenwald eked out a 4-3 win over #6 Garrett Lowney. Lowney led 3-2 late in the match, but Gruenwald notched a takedown with 10 seconds remaining to earn his eighth win of the season. It was Lowney's first match since the season-opening dual against Iowa. OSU's run continued at 125 pounds as #12 Skyler Holman dumped #14 Bobbe Lowe, 18-5. Holman registered four takedowns and two near-falls to cruise to the win.

Minnesota stopped the bleeding in the marquee match of the night as #3 Ryan Lewis got his revenge on #1 Johnny Thompson in a 6-5 thriller. Lewis scored the early takedown and led 4-2 at the end of one period, but Thompson stormed back to tie the match at five midway through the final period. Lewis tallied an escape to take the lead and held on for his second win over Thompson in three meetings. Thompson defeated Lewis, 5-4, last season in the NCAA Championship title bout.

Top-ranked Zack Esposito of Oklahoma State closed out the meet at 141 pounds with a 10-7 win over unranked Trent Hatlevig. Esposito led the entire match, but Hatlevig kept it close with a hard-nosed effort.

The Golden Gophers head to Phoenix, Ariz., on Sunday, Jan. 7, for the Sun Devil Duals. Minnesota takes on Embry Riddle at noon, Lock Haven at 2 p.m. and #9 Arizona State at 5:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers then travel to Nebraska to face the Huskers on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
