No. 3 Minnesota drops No. 8 Nebraska, 27-12, on the road in Lincoln

The third-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team improved to 6-2 on the season tonight with its 27-12 win over No. 8 Nebraska in front of 1,062 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track in Lincoln, Neb. The Golden Gophers won seven bouts, including the first four, to post their eighth consecutive win over the Huskers (8-2).

The meet began at 165 pounds with third-ranked Jacob Volkmann giving the Maroon and Gold four team points with a 15-3 win over Jacob Klein. Volkmann improved to 12-2 on the season with the triumph. At 174 pounds, No. 10 Josh McLay posted a 5-3 win over No. 20 Travis Pascoe to move the team score to 7-0. Tenth-ranked Damion Hahn then notched his first win over a ranked opponent this season with a 5-3 victory over No. 17 B.J. Padden. Hahn moved his record to 3-1. The Golden Gophers wrapped up their four-bout streak to open the dual with Jacob Lininger's pin of Kyle Gubbels in 4:35 at 197 pounds. It was Lininger's third fall of the season.

With the score 16-0 Minnesota, the Huskers tallied nine points to get back into the dual. At heavyweight, Mitch Manstedt pinned Chad Mentel in 1:55 to give NU six team points. Mentel, now 12-8 this season, was filling in for regular starter Garrett Lowney who continues to rehab from shoulder surgery. Fifth-ranked Jason Powell then defeated No. 13 Bobbe Lowe, 10-5, in overtime to push the score to 16-9.

Minnesota won three of the next four bouts to put away the meet, beginning with top-ranked Ryan Lewis' 19-3 technical fall win over Joey Malia. Nebraska picked up its final win of the night at 141 pounds as Matt Murray downed Trent Hatlevig, 6-3. Minnesota was then deducted one-team point, which placed the score at 20-12 with two weight classes remaining.

Minnesota ended the Huskers' hope of a comeback when second-ranked Jared Lawrence defeated No. 15 Travis Shufelt, 8-6. Shufelt closed the match to 6-5 with and escape with 38 seconds remaining but wasn't able! to record a takedown as Lawrence went on to take the match. The final match of the night saw Matt Nagel give the U of M four more team points with a 14-3 major decision over Nate McMillin at 157 pounds. Nagel, now 14-6 on the season, was wrestling in place of top-ranked Luke Becker.

The Golden Gophers are out of action until the 2003 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Dual Meet Championships on Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 18-19, in Columbus, Ohio.
