The Luther wrestling team posted an impressive 21-15 victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse here in Decorah. La Crosse entered this match on an 11-match win streak and ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III. The Eagles only loss of the season prior to this evening, was 23-14 loss to the University of Wisconsin on Nov. 16. Luther entered the match ranked eighth in the nation and had not wrestled since Dec. 11.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead thanks to decisions by Deke Stanke (HWT) and Tom Tribon (125). The Norse responded with five consecutive decisions, taking a 15-6 lead after co-captain Jesse Reyerson posted a 2-0 victory at 165.
The highlight of this stretch was at 149 when the Eagles Troy Fabry, ranked seventh in the nation with a record of 14-0, squared off against Luther's Garrett Kurth. Kurth, the national champion in 2001 and national runner-up last season, is the top ranked wrestler at 149. Kurth defeated Fabry 9-4.
Continuing the match, the Eagles Nick Patenaude defeated Luther's Lon Welsh at 174, bringing the score to 15-9. Luther's Danny Adam secured the victory, with a fall over Jason Lullof at 6:15, giving the Norse a 21-9 lead, putting the match out of reach. In the final match of the evening, the Eagles Matt Morris pinned Luther's Wyatt Reyerson at 4:37. The final was Luther 21, UW-La Crosse 15.
The win raised Luther's dual meet record to 5-1, La Crosse fell to 11-2.
This Saturday evening, the Norse will host the Wartburg Knights. Wartburg will enter this match as the top ranked team in the nation. This match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
