1/9/03

Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State wrestling team hosted their second home dual of the season against NCC rival Northern Colorado. The Mavericks earned their first win of the season by routing the Bears by a score of 28-11, bringing their dual record to 1-1 (1-0, NCC) on the season, with UNC falling to 0-2.

The match of the night came early when #3 senior Cory Beckman (New Hampton, Iowa) squared off against #2 Brody Olson. Beckman, who owned a 1-2 record against Olson last year, notched a 5-4 victory over Olson. Decisions by senior Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) at 165, senior Joel Schrimpf (Goodhue, Minn.) at 184, and junior Jon Dierks (Waldorf, Minn.) at 174, helped the Mavericks gain a 12-3 lead. Falls from senior Tony Fratzke (Hutchinson, Minn.) at 3:58 and sophomore Mike Engelmann (Spencer, Iowa) at 4:51 helped build the Maverick's lead to 24-11. Rhoten stunned Stafford with a 14-4 major decision win, giving Rhoten his first ever victory as a Maverick. The win helped the Mavericks earn a 28-11 victory over the Bears.
