1/12/03
FARGO, ND -- Third-ranked North Dakota State opened its North Central Conference dual meet schedule with a 24-9 win over No. 15-ranked Northern Colorado on Sunday before a crowd of 685 at the Bison Sports Arena.
NDSU freshman MATHIAS BITZ won the most hotly contended battle of the afternoon at 141 pounds. Bitz (13-5) was awarded the winning point in the second overtime period after three consecutive false starts by UNC's fifth-ranked Ronnie Stafford. The Bison (2-0, 1-0 NCC) went up 9-0 at that point.
After Jared Spry won at 149 for the Bears (1-3, 1-3), North Dakota State junior PAUL CARLSON, the nation's top ranked wrestler at 157 pounds, held off second-ranked Brody Olson by a 3-1 count to put the Bison ahead 12-3.
The Bison won seven of 10 weight classes and never trailed in gaining their eighth straight home victory dating back to the 2000-01 season.
North Dakota State will return to the mat on Saturday and Sunday at the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Division II Duals in Columbus, OH.
