1/17/03 Kirksville, Mo. -- The Minnesota State wrestling team was in action tonight when they squared off against the Bulldogs of Truman State. The Mavericks won the first seven matches and picked up their third dual victory of the season as they defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 32-10. With the win, the Mavericks bring their dual record to 3-1 (1-0, NCC) on the season.
Junior Pete Miller (Le Center, Minn.) won the opening match of the night in the 165-pound class. Miller scored two takedowns and held on for a 4-3 win. In the 174-pound class, junior Jon Dierks (Waldorf, Minn.) notched two near falls in the first period before he pinned Tom Tajkowski at 3:43 into the match. Senior Joel Schrimpf (Goodhue, Minn.) squared off with Truman's Gregg Nurrenbern in the 184-pound weight class. The two were tied for most of the match before Schrimpf recorded a takedown with 15 seconds remaining in the match to earn the 5-3 win. Sophomore Paul Svien (Prescott, Wis.) picked up the win in the heavyweight battle by scoring a 20-5 technical fall over Bulldogs' Matt Sonn. Freshman Joey Neigum (Bismark, N.D.) collected an exciting win over Steve Cox of Truman in the 125-pound match. Both wrestlers scored points late in the match but Neigum notched a 3-2 decision with nearly four minutes of riding time. Senior #2 Tony Fratzke (Hutchinson, Minn.) collected a fall against Allen Stokes at 4:22 in the 133-pound bout.
What's Next: The Mavericks will see their next action when they travel to Aberdeen, S.D., for a non-conference dual with Northern State on Jan. 25. The Mavericks own a perfect 4-0 record against Northern State. The two most recently tangled last season, when Wolves visited Bresnan Arena. The Mavericks earned a 38-13 victory.
