2003 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Dual Meet Championships
January 18, 2003 at St. John Arena - Columbus, Ohio
The third-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team posted wins over No. 10 West Virginia and Michigan State this evening at the 2003 National Dual Meet Championships in Columbus, Ohio, staying alive in the consolation bracket. The Maroon and Gold downed the Mountaineers, 20-15, before doubling up the Spartans, 24-12, in the second round of consolation duals. The Golden Gophers battle No. 5 Arizona State tonight at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time at St. John Arena.
Against No. 6 seed West Vriginia, the Golden Gophers won six matches, but the Mountaineers forced the heavyweight match to decide the outcome. The two squads spilt the first four matches with Minnesota winning at 133 and 149 pounds, and WVU taking 125 and 141, to move the score to 8-6 Minnesota after four matches. The Maroon and Gold took a 14-6 lead with wins at 157 and 165, but West Virginia stormed back to take the lead. After a 3-2 win at 174 pounds by top-ranked Greg Jones over No. 8 Josh McLay, the Mountaineers took the lead with No. 14 Ryan Wilman's pin in 5:22 of Matt Nagel at 184 pounds. With the score tied at four in the third period, Wilman took Nagel down and rolled him to his back to give WVU a 15-14 lead. Minnesota escaped with the win after No. 10 Damion Hahn downed Adrian Thompson, 4-2, at 197 pounds, and No. 10 Garrett Lowney clinched the dual with a 7-3 win over No. 11 Brent Miller at heavyweight.
Versus Michigan State, the unseeded Spartans won the 125-pound match by fall, but Minnesota reeled off six consecutive bouts and seven of the last nine, to cruise to the win over the Big Ten foe. The Golden Gophers posted decision wins at 133, 141, 149, 157, 165 and 174 pounds to build a 15-6 lead. Trent Hatlevig notched his first win of the event, downing Darren McKnight, 8-4, at 141 pounds. Defending NCAA Champions Jared Lawrence and Luke Becker stayed unbeaten at the National Duals with wins over No. 9 Karl Nadolsky and No. 6 Gray Maynard, respectively. Michigan State captured two decisions at 184 and 197 pounds, but heavyweight Garrett Lowney sealed the win with a pin of John Wechter in 1:22. Lowney used a Greco Roman-type move to throw Wechter to his back and soon post his first fall of the season.
