The third-ranked Minnesota wrestling team won seven of 10 matches en route to a 22-12 win over Michigan (8-5, 3-1 Big Ten) this evening at the Sports Pavilion. The Golden Gophers improved to 14-4, 4-0 in the Big Ten.
Seventh-ranked Damion Hahn got Minnesota started with a 6-4 decision over 14th-ranked Kyle Smith a 197 pounds. Hahn took Smith down with 23 seconds left in the bout to secure the win. Ninth-ranked Garrett Lowney extended Minnesota's lead to 6-0 with an upset at heavyweight over fifth-ranked Greg Wagner. Lowney led the majority of the bout and secured the win with a takedown with six seconds left to win 5-2.
Michigan got on the board at 125 pounds when fifth-ranked A.J. Grant posted a 4-2 decision over Bobbe Lowe. Lowe reversed 39 seconds into the final period to lead 2-1 but Grant reversed back just 17 seconds later to lead 3-2. Adding 1:15 of advantage time, Grant escaped with a 4-2 win.
Minnesota grabbed the momentum back at 133 pounds when second-ranked Ryan Lewis scored a 14-5 major decision over Foley Dowd. Lewis posted two three-point near falls in the domnating win. At 141 pounds, 13th- ranked Derek Phillips posted a 5-2 decision over Michigan's Clark Forward. With the score knotted a 2-2, Phillips posted a reversal nine seconds into the final period and held on to win.
Second-ranked Jared Lawrence got all the match he could handle at 149 pounds from 19th-ranked Ryan Churella. Churella led 2-1 entering the final period but Lawrence scored two quick takedowns in the final period to gain the victory.
Luke Becker made it four straight wins for Minnesota, posting a 10-5 decision over eighth-ranked Ryan Bertin at 157 pounds. Bertin took a 3-2 lead after the first period but Becker fought back with three straight takedowns and eventually won 9-5.
At 165 pounds, Michigan's Pat Owen posted a huge upset, pinning fifth- ranked Jacob Volkmann in 1:36. Owen came out quickly, taking Volkmann down eight seconds into the match and then scoring a two-point near fall before Volkmann was able to escape. Owen quickly took Volkmann down again and rolled him.
Minnesota got back on track at 174 pounds when Josh McLay posted a 3- 2 decision over R.J. Boudro. Michigan's Willie Breyer decisioned Matt Nagel, 4-0, at 184 pounds to conclude the meet.
Minnesota returns to action on Sunday to face Northwestern at 2:00 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
