MANKATO, MN ÷ Bison senior MATT STRAWSER and junior PAUL CARLSON each recorded wins by fall as No. 3-ranked North Dakota State rolled to a 31-6 win Friday over No. 11-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato before a crowd of 451 North Central Conference wrestling fans at Bresnan Arena.
Strawser put a quick six points on the board for NDSU (9-3, 4-0 NCC) in the night's first bout at 125 pounds, pinning Joey Neigum in 1 minute, 26 seconds. NICK MAGEE's 2-0 decision over second-ranked Tony Fratzke at 133 pounds put the Bison up 9-0, and MATHIAS BITZ snapped a string of four straight losses with a decision over Bryce Bahe at 141 to push the Herd's lead to 12-0.
Carlson's pin at 5:45 of the 157-pound match was his first of the year and only the third of his career. The top-ranked wrestler in his class, Carlson (19-3 overall, 11-1 duals) recorded seven takedowns - three shy of the record 10 takedowns by Lee Petersen against North Dakota in the 1973-74 season - before getting the fall. His win put the Bison up 18-3 at the midway point of the dual.
MSU-Mankato's Jake Emerick stole a win from MIKE FIEDLER in the waning seconds of the 165 match. Emerick's takedown with just over a minute to go put him up 5-4, but Fiedler answered with a reversal for a 6-5 lead. Emerick came back with a reversal of his own with 5 seconds left to post a 7-6 win.
The heavy side of NDSU's lineup fared well against the Mavericks (5-3, 2-1 NCC). NATE PESTA used a late rally to win his first dual match in nine outings, edging Joel Schrimpf 4-3 at 184 pounds. Pesta scored an escape and a takedown in the final 12 seconds of the third period to bounce back from a 3-1 deficit for the victory.
Bison 197-pounder BRIAN KRAEMER snapped a two-match losing skid with a 14-4 romp over Mike Engelmann, and heavyweight CHRIS TUCHSCHERER made his first dual meet appearance a good one with a 6-1 win over Paul Svien.
North Dakota State returns to its home mat on Wednesday night for a non-conference dual against Northern State (SD) at 7 p.m.
