#12 Minnesota State Upsets #3 Nebraska-Omaha 25-15

Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State wrestling team saw its last action of the regular season tonight as they hosted #3 ranked Nebraska-Omaha in a North CentralConference dual. The Mavericks won five matches in a row to help them to a 25-15 victory over the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha. The win marks the first time that Minnesota State has beaten UNO since the 1997-98 season. With the victory, MSU's record stands at 8-4 overall (4-2, NCC). While UNO's record falls to 9-4 overall (4-2, NCC).

Senior #2 Tony Fratzke (Hutchinson, Minn.) picked up his 10th dual victory of the season with a 7-6 win over #7 ranked Mitch Waite in the 133-pound weight class. The Maverick's five match win streak started at 149-pounds, when senior Chris Murphy (Blue Earth, Minn.) came out with a 6-3 decision. In the 157-pound bout, senior #3 Cory Beckman (New Hampton, Iowa) collected his 30th win of the season by beating Dirk Desmond with a major decision of 14-4. Senior #3 Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) picked up his 10th dual win of the season with a 6-1 decision at the 165-pound class. In perhaps the most crutial and exciting match of the evening at 174, junior Jon Dierks (Waldorf, Minn.) met Dan Vech of UNO. It took an extra period to decide the outcome match, as Dierks pinned Vech at 7:36 to give the Mavericks the 19-11 lead. At 184, senior Joel Schrimpf (Goodhue, Minn.) picked up a win by forfeit, increasing the Maverick lead to 25-11. In the final match of the night, sophomore Mike Engel!

mann (Spencer, Iowa) met the #1 ranked wrestler at 197-pounds, Chad Wallace of UNO. Engelmann fell to Wallace by a 12-3 score, but Minnesota State went on to collect the 25-15 dual victory.

Mavericks In National Rankings: In the latest NCAA Division II Coaches' Association poll released Feb. 19, the Mavericks are ranked 12th as a team and have three individuals ranked in their respective weight class. Senior Tony Fratzke (Hutchinson, Minn.) is ranked second at 133, senior Cory Beckman (New Hampton, Iowa) is at the number three spot in the 157-pound class, and senior Jake Emerick (Pella, Iowa) owns the third spot at 165-pounds.

Coach Makovsky: Jim Makovsky is in his tenth season at the helm of the Minnesota State wrestling team. The Mavericks are 117-50-2 under Makovsky and his career record stands at 142-69-4. Makovsky is a 1989 graduate of Valley City State University where he served as head coach for four seasons prior to his arrival at MSU. Makovsky has tutored 33 All-Americans in his career and seven national champions.

What's Next?: The Mavericks next competition will be at the North Central Conference Championships in Fargo, N.D. on Mar. 2.
