Minnesota drops Indiana, 25-17, in season's dual meet finale

The third-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team defeated unranked Indiana, 25-17, today at the Sports Pavilion, winning six of 10 matches to finish the season with a 17-5 overall record and a 7-1 mark in the Big Ten. With the win, the Maroon and Gold clinched at least a tie for the 2003 Big Ten Dual Meet Championship for the third consecutive season. The meet was Senior Day as Gold Country bid farewell to five Golden Gophers ˆ Ryan Lewis, Derek Phillips, Jared Lawrence, Luke Becker and Garrett Lowney.The seniors went 3-1 at the meet with Luke Becker sitting out the meet in favor of sophomore Tyler Marr.

The meet began at heavyweight with No. 7 Garrett Lowney posting a 9-5 win on Joel Powers. Lowney took a 4-3 lead after two periods and tallied six points in the final period to improve to 9-4 on the season. The Golden Gophers took a 9-0 lead after the 125-pound match as No. 15 Joe Dubuque lost by injury default to UM's Bobbe Lowe. The high-scoring match came to an abrupt end after a scramble resulted in Lowe picking up Dubuque and dropping him awkwardly on his head. Dubuque lay motionless on the mat for several minutes before the match was called. Dubuque led 8-6 at the time of the default.

The Maroon and Gold kept the shutout going at 133 pounds as top-ranked Ryan Lewis overwhelmed Greg Schaefer in an 8-2 decision. Lewis compiled over four minutes of advantage time and didn't allow an IU point until the third period to move to 25-2 overall this season. The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard at 141 pounds as No. 12 Coyte Cooper downed No. 11 Derek Phillips, 16-6, in an exciting match. Cooper led the majority of a bout that featured four reversals and six near-fall points between the two grapplers.

Second-ranked Jared Lawrence pushed the UM advantage to 16-3, dominating Matt Cooper, 16-3, at 149 pounds. Lawrence scored early and often, scoring seven takedowns and 3:46 of riding time to improve to 24-2 on the season. Indiana added six team points at 157 pounds with Isaac Knable's pin of Tyler Marr in 2:29 to move the score to 16-9. The Golden Gophers responded with a pin of their own at 165 pounds as No. 7 Jacob Volkmann pinned Alex LaPointe in 5:50. Volkmann led 9-0 at the time of the pin and had nearly five mintues of advantage time. The fall was Volkmann's fifth of the season and moved his record to 23-5 on the season. The Hoosiers added three team points at 174 pounds as Brady Richardson downed No. 20 Josh McLay to move the team score to 22-12. Richardson tallied the lone takedown midway through the second period to take the win.

The IU comback continued at 184 pounds as No. 18 Ty Matthews registered a techincal fall win on Matt Nagel in 4:03 (17-1). Matthews dominated the match from the beginning, scoring 13 near-fall points. Tenth-ranked Damion Hahn ended the Hoosier threat and closed out the dual meet win, defeating No. 8 Pat DeGain in dramatic fashion. DeGain took a 3-1 lead after two periods before Hahn tallied an escape to begin the third period. Hahn then scored the bout-winning takedown with 23 seconds remaining in the match to clinch the victory. With the win, Hahn improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten.

The Golden Gophers take a two-week break before heading to Madison, Wis., for the 2003 Big Ten Championships on March 8-9. Minnesota will be aiming for its third consecutive conference championship.
