Maughan wins No. 400 by criteria, NDSU captures National Duals
title
January 18, 2004
CLEVELAND, OH--National Hall of Famer Bucky Maughan won his 400th
career dual as the head coach of North Dakota State Universitys
wrestling program on Sunday when the Bison defeated the University of
Central Oklahoma by criteria, 15-15, for the NWCA
National Duals tournament title at Cleveland State
University.
Maughan, in his 40th year as the coach of the Bison, has a career
coaching record of 400-112-11. Only the second full-time wrestling
coach in school history, he ranks among the some of the top coaches
at all levels of the NCAA.
NDSU, ranked No. 1 in Division II this entire season, won its 11th
straight dual meet to achieve the coachs milestone.
The Bison (6-0) turned back a tenacious Central Oklahoma team that
has won the last two NCAA Division II championships.
The Bronchos, now 10-2 and ranked No. 2 in the nation, won the
first two bouts Sunday and later tied the score at 9, answering NDSU
wins by Mathias Bitz (141), Zach Stevens (149) and Paul Carlson (157)
with a decision at 165 pounds by two-time national champ Shawn
Silvis.
The match was tied again at 12 entering the ninth bout of the
afternoon.
UCOs Kevin Lochner edged Brian Kraemer 4-3 at 197 and Bison
heavyweight Joe Bryce followed with a 4-2 decision to knot the dual
at 15.
North Dakota State won by NCAA criterion G, most near-fall
points.
It was the third time in four years that NDSU and UCO met in the
National Duals championship. The Bison won by the same criterion in
2001 (but were credited a team tie) and the Bronchos won in 2002 by a
score of 26-15.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host NAIA rival University of
Mary on Wednesday night and NCAA North Region foe Minnesota
State-Moorhead on Friday night at the Bison Sports Arena. Both duals
