St. Cloud State update

THIS WEEK'S ACTION: The Huskies (1-5, 0-4 NCC) will travel to Nebraska-Omaha on Feb. 14 for a 3 p.m. match against the Mavericks in Omaha, Neb.

LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: In action against St. John's on Feb. 4, in St. Cloud, the Huskies dropped a tough 25-16 decision. The Huskies gained a forfeit win by Sean Bere at 174-pounds to begin the night. SCSU also gained a win by Josh Lindquist at 125-pounds, Seth Cole at 149-pounds and Dan Duch at 165-pounds...SCSU placed fourth at the 2004 North Country Tournament on Feb. 7 in Collegeville. The Huskies posted 72.5 points, while Augsburg won the 15 team tournament with 176 points. Dickinson State was second with 90 points and Ridgewater CC was third with 77.5 points. Host St. John's finished in back of SCSU with 59.5 points. In action at 125 pounds, Josh Lindquist placed sixth with a record of 2-3, and Derek Miller placed fourth at 133-pounds with a 3-2 record. In the bout for third place, Miller dropped a 7-0 match to Micah Mathieson of Dickinson State. At 141-pounds, Tom Messerli went 0-2. Cole placed third for the Huskies at 149-pounds, which included a 7-0 win over Brandon Kok of Moorhead. Cole posted a solid 4-1 record at the tournament. In the 157-pound bracket, Blake Christopherson finished in 6th place with a record of 2-3. Duch placed second at 165-pounds. He won a 7-3 first round decision and posted a 3:30 pin over #4 seed Art Martinez of Dickinson State. In the semi-finals, Duch added a big 11-5 win over #1 seed Ryan Valek of Augsburg. In the title bout, Duch dropped a thrilling 15-10 decision against #3 seed John Zamora of Dickinson State. At 174-pounds, Bere went 2-2 and Mike Gritti placed 5th at 184-pounds. In the fifth place match, Gritti won 5-1 over Trevor Anderson of Regina. Gritti was 4-2 at the tourney. To round out the day, Mikal Peterson was 2-2 at 197-pounds.

LAST YEAR: St. Cloud State University (1-13, 0-6 NCC) finished its 2002-03 season with a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Wheeling, W.V. on March 14-15. That marked the Huskies' third highest finish at the NCAA championships. At the 2002-03 NCC championships, SCSU placed seventh.

TEAM NOTES: All wrestling fans should make plans now to attend the upcoming NCAA Division II North Regional tournament, which will be held at St. Cloud State on Sunday, Feb. 29. The action kicks off at 9 a.m. that day in Halenbeck Hall. The regional tournament replaces the NCC tournament this season as the regional qualifier for nationals..The Huskies are coming off an incredible finish by the 2002-2003 wrestling team. The team sent four Huskies to Nationals and three became All-Americans, allowing a 9th place team finish at the NCAA Division II championships. The Huskies' 9th place finish at the NCAA meet is the team's best since finishing 8th in 1985-86. The team's best NCAA finish was a 7th place ending in 1982-83...back in the 1960s, the Huskies placed third at the NAIA meet in 1963 and 1965.

SCSU COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 11th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 62-76 overall/21-46 NCC record during since 1993.
