THIS WEEK'S ACTION: The Huskies (1-6, 0-4 NCC) will travel to Minnesota State, Moorhead on Thursday, Feb. 19 for a 7 p.m. match against the Dragons. On Friday, Feb. 20, the Huskies will travel to Minnesota State, Mankato for a 7 p.m. NCC showdown against the Mavericks.
LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: In action at #3 ranked Nebraska-Omaha (9-2, 3-0 NCC) on Saturday, Feb. 14, the St. Cloud State University wrestling team (1-6, 0-4 NCC) dropped a 22-12 decision in Omaha, Neb. The Huskies started the dual match with back-to-back victories, as Blake Christopherson collected an 8-4 victory over UNO's Dirk Desmond at 157-pounds. Dan Duch added to SCSU's point total with a 3-2 decision over UNO's Blu Wahle at 165-pounds. UNO rallied with a 15-9 win at 174-pounds by Nick Blanchard over SCSU's Sean Bere. At 184-pounds, UNO's Dan Vech defeated SCSU's Mike Gritti by a 6-0 tally. At 194-pounds, Mikal Peterson of SCSU charted a big 3-2 win over UNO's Lance Toldstedt. At heavyweight, UNO's Les Sigman won by forfeit and UNO's Dustin Tovar gained a 13-5 win against SCSU's Josh Lindquist at 125-pounds. SCSU's final win came at 133-pounds as Derek Miller coined a 6-2 win over UNO's Jimmy Ball. To end the match, UNO gained wins at 141-pounds and 149- pounds.
LAST YEAR: St. Cloud State University (1-13, 0-6 NCC) finished its 2002-03 season with a ninth place finish at the NCAA Division II championships in Wheeling, W.V. on March 14-15. That marked the Huskies' third highest finish at the NCAA championships. At the 2002-03 NCC championships, SCSU placed seventh.
TEAM NOTES: All wrestling fans should make plans now to attend the upcoming NCAA Division II North Regional tournament, which will be held at St. Cloud State on Sunday, Feb. 29. The action kicks off at 9 a.m. that day in Halenbeck Hall. The regional tournament replaces the NCC tournament this season as the regional qualifier for nationals..The Huskies are coming off an incredible finish by the 2002-2003 wrestling team. The team sent four Huskies to Nationals and three became All-Americans, allowing a 9th place team finish at the NCAA Division II championships. The Huskies' 9th place finish at the NCAA meet is the team's best since finishing 8th in 1985-86. The team's best NCAA finish was a 7th place ending in 1982-83...back in the 1960s, the Huskies placed third at the NAIA meet in 1963 and 1965.
SCSU COACHING STAFF: The Huskies are led this season by Steve Grimit (Western Illinois, 1987). Grimit is in his 11th season as head coach of the Huskies. Grimit has led the Huskies to a 62-77 overall/21-47 NCC record during since 1993.
